After more than a decade, Sony Pictures is finally breaking its worst Spider-Man franchise trend with an upcoming release. This is thanks to the upcoming live-action Spider-Noir series, which now has its first trailer and premiere date.
Played by Nicholas Cage, Sony’s Spider-Noir series will mark a major first for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, which began with 2018’s Venom. Not only is Spider-Noir the first television series and set in its own unique reality within the Spider-Verse, but it’s also the first time in 12 years that Sony alone has a live-action project with a Spider variant in the lead.
Besides The MCU, Sony Pictures Hasn’t Had A Live-Action Project Starring Spider-Man Since 2014
When you remove Sony’s collaborations with Marvel Studios (Tom Holland’s MCU Spider-Man) and the animated Spider-Verse movies, the last time Sony released a live-action, Spider-Man-led project was back in 2014 with Andrew Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
That’s 12 years, a massive gap for one of pop culture’s greatest superheroes and for a franchise known as “Sony’s Spider-Man Universe”. Likewise, reactions to the SSU movies we’ve had in the interim are incredibly mixed (Tom Hardy’s Venom trilogy, Morbius, Madame Web, Kraven the Hunter).
While the Venom movies notably found some wider commercial success, the broader strategy has long felt very unfocused, as Spider-Man himself was largely absent from his own cinematic universe. Thankfully, Spider-Noir is set to finally break that trend with Nicholas Cage’s 1930s version of the Webslinger, having first voiced the character in animation in the Spider-Verse movies.
Spider-Noir Looks Incredibly Promising For Sony Pictures
The cherry on top is that the new Spider-Noir series looks like it’s going to be very good, especially after its first official trailer.
Promising the atmospheric and gritty detective style the Spider-Noir of the comics is known for, all signs are pointing to Sony having a major hit on its hands (both in black-and-white and in “true hue” color). The ending sequence of Spider-Noir swinging through the streets alone will likely be enough to get Spider-Man fans to tune in when the series begins streaming in May.
With Spider-Gwen and Spider-Punk spin-offs reportedly in development as well, Spider-Noir looks to be just the beginning of Sony’s new Spider-Man strategy that’s been a long time coming.
Spider-Noir is set to begin streaming May 27th on Prime Video and MGM+.
