It’s been almost a year since Rachel Zegler has appeared on the big screen, but she’s about to begin filming her next movie after Snow White bombed at the box office.

Disney released the live-action remake in March 2025. Not only did Snow White earn a Rotten score of 39% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it also underwhelmed at the box office, grossing $205 million against a budget of $336 million. Zegler then starred on Broadway and the West End, and joined the cast of She Gets It from Me.

Now Deadline is reporting that She Gets It from Me, Zegler’s first movie since Snow White, will begin filming on February 23. Marisa Tomei, best known for My Cousin Vinny, The Wrestler and Spider-Man, is playing Zegler’s mother in the movie. The Office‘s Ed Helms and Paper Town‘s Nat Wolff are also set to star as their family members.

She Gets It from Me, which is based on a true story, centers around Zegler’s character, Nicky Jannis, as she searches for her birth mother, Charlotte Wolfe, ahead of her wedding. For years, Charlotte has wondered what has become of her daughter’s life, but their reunion isn’t exactly smooth sailing as they grapple with what it means to be family.

She Gets It from Me is being directed by Julia von Heinz, with a screenplay by Jay Reiss. The production team includes Reiss, Anna Werner, Susan Leber and Jack Chinery.

In a statement, von Heinz explained that a lot of adoption movies focus on the “search for the long-lost parent,” but She Gets It from Me will expand upon that idea and show “what happens after that emotional reunion.” The premise is ripe for comedy “but also deeply meaningful questions about the nature of motherhood.”

“We’ve all seen adoption movies that focus on the search for the long-lost parent, but what happens after that emotional reunion. That’s a whole new territory we explore in this film, full of comedy but also deeply meaningful questions about the nature of motherhood.”

Zegler’s very first movie was Steven Spielberg’s 20121 remake of West Side Story, which saw the actress starring as María. The role landed her a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and a Critics’ Choice nomination.

She then starred in Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, the latter of which grossed $347 million at the box office.

After two lower-profile projects (Y2K and Spellbound), Zegler was cast as the titular Snow White in the live-action remake. Unfortunately, Snow White was plagued with controversy, from some of the casting choices to the interpretation of the dwarfs (with Peter Dinklage speaking out early on in the filming process), and even the political views of the two lead cast members.

By the time the film was released in theaters, the low box office numbers and critical reviews only compounded already existing issues. At the Razzie Awards, which honors the worst movies of the year, Snow White received several nominations, including Worst Picture, Worst Remake, Worst Supporting Actor, Worst Director and Worst Screenplay.

While its theatrical release was panned, Snow White fared much better on Disney+, where it debuted at the top of the streaming charts.

Zegler has taken a break from movies to focus on her theatre career, but now the actress is just days away from stepping back onto a film set for the first time since Snow White.
