Pirates of the Caribbean 6 rumors about Jack Sparrow’s son and Margot Robbie’s franchise debut are finally addressed by producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
While Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is confirmed to be in development, it has been unclear what the story or cast of the long-awaited sequel will be. In 2018, a reboot was announced with Robbie in the lead role, only for her to later say in 2022 that it was no longer moving forward. Another major question is whether Johnny Depp will return to reprise his role of Jack Sparrow, and there have been rumors that the iconic character’s son will be at the center of the story.
Bruckheimer, who produced all five previous movies and is attached to the sixth installment, has now told Entertainment Tonight that “They’re close on part of it. That’s all I’ll tell ya.” His response does not clarify whether Sparrow’s son or Robbie will be in the next Pirates of the Caribbean film, but it does confirm that the sequel’s development continues to move along and that the project is closer than ever to becoming a reality.
This update comes close to a decade after Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales was released in theaters in 2017. It grossed $795 million against a reported budget of $230 million, proving that the franchise could still be a box office hit. A continuation has been complicated by Depp’s legal battle with Amber Heard and his reluctance to work with Disney again based on the way they publicly cut ties with him amid the allegations in 2018.
Since 2018, Margot Robbie’s movies have included the $1.4 billion box office and pop culture sensation Barbie, playing Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey and James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, along with the critical and commercial disappointments of Babylon, Amsterdam, and A Big Bold Beautiful Journey. Her newest movie is Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of Wuthering Heights, where she stars alongside Jacob Elordi. While her films’ box office numbers have varied drastically, her immense star power and lucrative successes could still make her an appealing choice to Disney for Pirates of the Caribbean 6.
Focusing on Jack Sparrow’s son would follow in the footsteps of the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, where much of the story shifts to Henry Turner (Brenton Thwaites), the son of Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) and Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), and Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario), the daughter of Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush). Jack Sparrow’s son in Pirates of the Caribbean 6 would complete the next generation of children born from the franchise’s original main characters. Knightley and Bloom could also potentially reprise their roles after their characters’ reunion with Henry, and the last post-credits scene even teased a potential return for Davey Jones (Bill Nighy) as well.
