Doomsdays As Chris Hemsworth Reflects On His Tragic Journey

Avengers: Doomsday will finally see Chris Hemsworth making his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as Phase 6 begins to near its end. Thor’s MCU timeline will soon see the iconic Avenger return to the franchise, with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom set to take on the multiverse.

In an interview with BroBible, Hemsworth spoke about Thor’s film legacy, with the many directors who have handled his arc since 2011. The outlet asked what the Australian actor is most proud of about Thor’s growth over the last 15 years.

Hemsworth expressed gratitude, “First of all, thank you for the compliment,” before adding that “Thor’s role changed in every film. I remember the first couple I did with Kenneth Branagh — that was a complete starting point and jumping-off point.” Proud of how “I was in the arms of one of the best directors and most detailed, collaborative partners, and it was brilliant,” Hemsworth elaborated on the later years, “Then I worked with different directors. Some had a clear handle on who they thought the character was, and some didn’t.”

He even stressed that some of them have admitted that they didn’t necessarily handle Thor the best, as Hemsworth stated, “Even to their own admission — I remember Joss Whedon saying it’s a tricky character to write, especially once he’s acquired that strength.” By the time he reached the Taika Waititi era, that is when the MCU alum began feeling tired of the direction for his character.

“It was really around working with Taika where I was kind of sick of what I’d been doing, and he was like, ‘Yeah, so am I. Let’s explore a different space.” I hope that brought something unpredictable to the character,” Hemsworth commented. With Thor being part of the Avengers: Doomsday story, the star is happy about the bigger voice he has now.

Chris Hemsworth: In the more recent films since then, I felt like the character had earned his seat at the table. Before that, I felt like the new guy. I remember sitting around on Doomsday with all these new characters, people in their first Avengers film, and thinking, ‘I have a bit of agency here. I should have a bigger voice or opinion as the character. Owning that a little more, he does feel like one of the elders. He’s 2,000 years old or something, so we tried to play into that more than we had before.

BroBible: There’s also the sense with Thor, of, “The s— that I’ve seen, I’m tired of this. I really am. I’m tired…”

Chris Hemsworth: [laughs] Yeah! Yeah… You reach a point in life where there’s an exhaustion and weariness, and we really leaned into that.

Marvel Studios has been teasing the larger story for the Avengers: Doomsday cast since December 2025, with four teasers having been released. Filming completed in September 2025, but additional photography with various actors will be taking place this spring.

In terms of the next Avengers: Doomsday trailer, there is no word yet on when it will actually be released. Marvel Studios will be starting filming on Avengers: Secret Wars in the summer, with the Russo brothers returning to direct.

Avengers: Doomsday opens on December 18.
