Ajax have opened negotiations with Arsenal over the permanent transfer of defender Oleksandr Zinchenko this winter, according to De Telegraaf.

The Ukrainian spent the first half of the season on loan with Nottingham Forest, but his temporary stint was terminated by mutual consent.

Zinchenko is now expected to join Ajax in the Eredivisie.

Ajax initially planned to sign the left-back on a short-term loan before securing a permanent move when his Arsenal contract expires on June 30.

However, the Gunners have resisted that prospect and want to secure some cash. They prefer to sanction his departure on a permanent deal.

Talks are ongoing between the clubs and a package could be agreed soon.

Zinchenko was initially expected to undergo his medical on Tuesday, and will now have to wait until Thursday to finalise the formalities.

The former Manchester City man had the choice of joining another Premier League outfit, but has decided to pursue a new challenge at Ajax.
