Steam’s New Free Dark Souls-Style Game Is Worth Your Time

If you’re using Steam every day, you’ll probably know there are free games dropping over there all the time. You’ll also probably know that only a small percentage of them are actually any good. Fortunately, we’re here to separate the wheat from the chaff, and draw your attention to a promising new souls-like on Steam that already has some very strong reviews.

Rogue Masters was released on Steam yesterday, and is completely free to download and play. It looks like a crossover between Dark Souls and Vampire Survivors, and plays like one too. It’s basically a gothic co-op survival game you can play with up to five friends, and it’s well worth a look.

Rogue Masters Is Free On Steam Now

Don’t miss out

Developed by Advance Garde and Main Leaf, Rogue Masters invites you to drop into a horde of monsters and fight to survive for as long as you can. That’s more or less the brunt of the game, but there’s a reason why games like Vampire Survivors and Megabonk are such hits, right?

Here’s a taste of the game’s setting and story, such as it is:

“A civilization that lacks Willpower is doomed to collapse against Entropy, the force responsible for corrupting the universe. Cooperate with up to 6 warriors and use your Willpower to fight against waves of increasingly stronger creatures until you reach the Champion of Entropy, an extremely powerful foe you’ll prove your worth against.”

The game’s features include:

  • Six-player multiplayer and horde survival.
  • Multiple weapons and souls-like combat.
  • Character builds and special equipment
  • Character customization and an extensive transmogrification system.
  • Host your own room or find one to join in the server list, along with the connection quality to the host (the game uses Peer-to-Peer connections, so there are no dedicated servers).
  • Offline solo mode available so you can play alone
  • NO microtransactions. Everything is acquired through gameplay.

Gamers Are Enjoying It So Far

The fact it’s free probably helps

I have to stress, this is a very small game from a small group of developers, so it’s not exactly got a thriving player-base right now. At the time of writing, there are 96 people in the game, according to SteamDB, though I’d argue that’s actually a really impressive result for a first release from an unknown developer in just 24 hours. And I’m pretty confident that number will continue to grow.

User reviews for Rogue Masters are currently Mostly Positive, with many gamers praising the multiplayer framework and its fresh approach to the souls-like genre. The main issue seems to be the game isn’t nearly as much fun to play solo, which is a problem if more people aren’t getting involved with it. So, I guess my advice to you would be: head over to Steam and round up some buddies for Rogue Masters.
