For Good Box Office Overtakes Highest-Grossing Minions Movie In Universal’s All-Time Charts

Wicked: For Good passes the most successful movie of one of Universal’s highest-grossing franchises in the all-time domestic charts. The Broadway adaptation sequel is winding down its theatrical run, having been released on digital just before the new year. Per The Numbers, Wicked: For Good has, to date, grossed $508 million worldwide, while 2024’s Wicked grossed more than $750 million.

Following its record-breaking opening weekend, Wicked: For Good‘s box office swiftly declined. Now, Deadline reports that Wicked: For Good grossed $970K domestically on Wednesday (-33% from Tuesday), then an additional $1.1 million on Thursday (+21% from Thursday), bringing its weekly total up to $10.2 million and its total domestic gross to $336.6 million in its sixth week in theaters.

On Universal Pictures’ all-time domestic box office charts, this moves Wicked: For Good up to No. 14, swapping places with 2015’s Minions, which grossed $336,045,770 domestically and $1.1 billion worldwide. This is the first installment in the spinoff series of Despicable Me; the entire Despicable Me/Minions franchise has grossed $5.6 billion worldwide.

Despicable Me 2 and 4 are currently No. 10 and 11, respectively, at Universal’s all-time domestic box office, while Minions is its sixth highest-grossing movie worldwide ever. The first Wicked is the company’s third highest-grossing movie domestically (after 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie and 2015’s Jurassic World) and No. 19 worldwide.

With its domestic gross hovering around $1 million daily and nearing the end of its theatrical run, Wicked: For Good probably isn’t going to hit many more box office milestones. The “Part 2” movie saw an overall less enthusiastic reception than its predecessor, with a 67% Rotten Tomatoes score (in comparison to Wicked‘s 88%, while the audience scores are 93% vs. 95%).

There was still a lot of praise for the lead performances by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, who have both secured Golden Globes nominations for the second year running, though a win for either of them won’t boost Wicked: For Good‘s box office if it is no longer in theaters. Wicked: For Good also stars Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode, Bowen Yang, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum.

The Wicked movie franchise, as of today, has grossed more than $1.2 billion worldwide, making for an overall very successful adaptation. Though things are coming to an end, Wicked: For Good is still achieving some small wins before it heads to the awards shows to see what else it can accomplish after last year’s impressive haul of Oscar nominations.
