Doomsday Characters Who Can Fight Doctor Doom, Ranked By Their Chances Of Winning

If stopping Doctor Doom comes down to an epic final battle, which it most likely will, whether or not that will happen may depend largely on a handful of the characters confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday. From the looks of things, heroes and villains across multiple realities in the multiverse will be coming together to oppose Robert Downey, Jr’s Victor von Doom in the upcoming Avengers movie.

Sam Wilson’s Avengers team, the Thunderbolts, the X-Men from Fox’s movies, the Fantastic Four, and representatives from Wakanda will all be on hand when Doctor Doom starts making waves in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not much is known about Marvel’s plan for him, but the number of heroes it’ll have at its fingertips says a lot about what he’ll be capable of and what his power level may be.

Beating him could require a lot of things, from Mr. Fantastic’s ingenuity, to Steve Rogers’ leadership, to the advanced technology of the Wakandans. But the importance of raw power shouldn’t be underestimated either.

Admittedly, the bulk of the characters in the movie are unlikely to phase him much. For everything they bring to the table, Yelena Belova, Sam Wilson’s Captain America, Steve Rogers, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Human Torch, and so many others just aren’t a match for Doom. But, there are some characters in Avengers: Doomsday that do have what it takes to challenge him in combat.

Magneto

One of Doctor Doom’s contemporaries in Marvel Comics will be appearing in some capacity in Avengers: Doomsday. The archenemy of the X-Men, Magneto will have some sort of role in the film. Played by Ian McKellan, he’s been on both sides of Professor Xavier’s X-Men team, so its hard to say where he’ll fit into the picture, but like Namor, he has a history of both working with and against Doom, so a clash is certainly feasible, whether it’s a team-up with the heroes or a betrayal.

On one hand, Magneto may seem like he could fill the role of a secret weapon. Controlling metal is his primary super-power, and that’s obviously something he could weaponize against Doom. If Doom doesn’t count on Magneto’s involvement, that’s most certainly a viable way of defeating the heavily-armored Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday.

However, the comics have been proven that Magneto’s abilities aren’t a surefire method of stopping him. His armor is so advanced that in the past, he’s reversed its “magnetic polarity” to prevent Magneto’s powers from working on him. Theoretically, he could rely on the same tactic in Avengers: Doomsday.

Namor The Sub-Mariner

Namor in Black Panther Wakanda Forever

Of all the characters in Avengers: Doomsday, Namor the Sub-Mariner could very well have the easiest opening against Doctor Doom. After all, the Sub-Mariner is hardly a full-fledged superhero, and would therefore be someone Doom might consider partnering with. In addition to having an army at his command, Namor is one of the strongest people on the planet, and that’s one reason why Doom holds him in high regard.

Because their betrayals of each other are as frequent as their team-ups, there’s a good chance they’ll end up coming to blows, possibly putting Namor in a position to use his amazing strength against Doom. He is indeed capable of doing Doom severe harm, but it’s important to note that Doom, being the genius that he is, will likely be aware of Namor’s weakness and have a plan for it in case they fight.

The Thing

As one of the physical powerhouses of the Marvel Universe, the Thing of the Fantastic Four has enough brute force to reckon with Doom as well. In the classic comics, the Thing has been vital to many of Doctor Doom’s defeats, with his strength enabling him to land some devastating blows on the villain.

But in more recent decades, Doom has been significantly more resilient when it comes to dealing with simple raw power due to his increased use of magic and even more advanced technology in his armor. However, even with armor amplifying his strength, he’s not usually in the same class as the Thing.

Thanks to Doom’s large arsenal, the Thing probably wouldn’t be able to beat him one-on-one in Avengers: Doomsday, but he could take a heavy hand in the fighting.

Invisible Woman

Pure strength isn’t the only thing that can be effective against Doctor Doom. Despite lacking in that department, Sue Storm is one of Marvel’s deadliest characters, a notion that Fantastic Four: First Steps does much to support. With her force fields, she accomplished a feat that would be unfeasible for the vast majority of Marvel characters, which was hurting Galactus.

Anyone that can single-handedly pose a threat to the likes of Silver Surfer and Galactus is someone that should also concern Doctor Doom. This is reinforced by the comics, which have shown Invisible Woman using force fields to cut through his armor.

If Doctor Doom fights the combined forces of the MCU’s heroes, the Invisible Woman may be one of the first he seeks to eliminate. Provided he has the element of surprise, Doom could immediately take her out of the equation before she has a chance to deploy her force fields.

2

Thor

A character that’s even more dangerous to Doom than the Thing is Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder. What elevates Thor about the Thing in terms of his threat level is that not only he is one of Marvel’s heavy hitters, he also possesses one of its greatest weapons in Mjolnir and the ability to harness lightning.

Doctor Doom, at his peak, can and has defeated Thor, but the reverse is also true. With all his power, Thor is more than capable of holding his own against Doctor Doom, and could overwhelm him in a one-on-one battle unless Doctor Doom finds an outside source of power, akin to his “Emperor Doom” state.

Sentry

A relatively new addition to the MCU, Sentry a.k.a. Bob Reynolds is absolutely in a position to make a difference physically if Yelena’s team goes toe-to-toe against Doctor Doom. True to his depiction in the comics, the MCU’s Sentry has been recognized as one of the most dangerous forces in the world.

Sentry possesses a multitude of abilities, making him the MCU’s closest living equivalent to Superman in terms of sheer power. With his colossal strength, Sentry can trade blows with the strongest Marvel characters, including Thor and Hulk. That’ll make him an asset in fighting Doom, although to do so would come with the risk of unleashing the Void once more.

The darker side of Sentry’s persona is even more of a threat than Bob Reynolds, so much that it’s even been theorized heavily that Sentry may be a pawn in Doom’s plan in Avengers: Doomsday.
