There can hardly be comparison between the Premier League and the Ligue 1 in terms of competitiveness, but in the Champions League last season, Paris Saint-Germain knocked out Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal on their way to lifting the trophy, having also beaten Manchester City in the group stage.

They were, however, subsequently beaten by Chelsea in the FIFA Club World Cup final and needed penalties to win the UEFA Super Cup against Europa League winners, Tottenham Hotspur.
