Wake Up Dead Man may soon no longer be the No. 1 murder mystery movie on Netflix. The third installment in Rian Johnson’s critically acclaimed Knives Out series has been a streaming hit since it dropped on the platform on December 12, following a short theatrical run. However, now, the true crime documentary Murder in Monaco is climbing the streaming charts.
Hodges Usry’s (X-Men: First Class, The Conspirator) new Netflix true crime feature delves into the mysterious murder of billionaire banker Edmond Safra, who was found dead in his penthouse in Monaco in 1999. Only a few professional critics have reviewed Murder in Monaco, but it has garnered a couple of favorable reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as some positive audience reactions.
Per FlixPatrol, Murder in Monaco is the No. 4 movie in the world on Netflix today (December 22), just behind Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery at No. 3. 2018’s The Grinch is at No. 2, while South Korean disaster movie The Great Flood is streaming’s No. 1. The latter just unseated Knives Out as the higher-ranking movie on Netflix worldwide.
New and old holiday flicks are also currently very popular across various streaming platforms, with 2000’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas at No. 5 and 2025’s My Secret Santa at No. 7 (The Croods: A New Age is No. 6). Additionally, Murder in Monaco is No. 5 among the Top 10 Movies in the U.S. Today on Netflix (after A Line of Fire, A Cowboy Christmas Romance, Wake Up Dead Man, and The Great Flood).
Wake Up Dead Man, which has a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, has inevitably been a huge success on Netflix, but it is starting to fall off a couple of weeks after its premiere. Meanwhile, the release of a new true crime documentary has again garnered the attention of Netflix’s subscribers, who have come to expect quality content in this genre from the streaming giant.
For instance, though Netflix dropped The Perfect Neighbor on streaming at the beginning of the year, the documentary holds a 99% on Rotten Tomatoes and has maintained its momentum as a frontrunner for a Best Documentary nomination at the 2026 Oscars. This feature film depicts the events surrounding a fatal altercation between neighbors in Florida, critiquing the state’s “stand your ground” laws.
Though less critically acclaimed, Netflix still continues to produce its Monster anthology series about different serial killers. Netflix continues to expand its library of fictional and real murder mystery stories, as well as more lighthearted fare, offering subscribers very different modes of entertainment this holiday season.
