Star Trek fans don’t need to worry about Christina Chong leaving Star Trek: Strange New Worlds before the series ends. Production of the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is nearly complete, with the series to wrap filming before the Christmas holidays.

Paramount+ renewed Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for season 5, which consists of 6 episodes, when Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 premiered in June 2025. Filming of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 wrapped in July, and it’s expected to premiere in 2026 on Paramount+ with season 5 arriving in 2027.

Five seasons of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (albeit with only 46 episodes in total) match how Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Lower Decks also ran for five seasons, which seems to be the ceiling set by Paramount+. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds wraps up its ‘5-year mission’ with a plan to lead into the start of Star Trek: The Original Series.

Christina Chong Is Playing La’an Until The End Of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

On Instagram, Christina Chong announced that she has series wrapped filming of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, marking the end of her five-season run playing Lieutenant La’an Noonien-Singh. However, some fans misunderstood when Christina and La’an are leaving Strange New Worlds.

Christina Chong wrapped filming Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 5, which means that La’an will be in the show up to and including the series finale. Christina is already confirmed to return in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4, so Lt. La’an Noonien-Singh will be part of the 16 total episodes coming in seasons 4 and 5.

It’s possible that La’an may miss the odd Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 or 5 episode. For instance, Jess Bush did not appear as Nurse Christine Chapel in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, episode 9, “Terrarium.”

Christina Chong’s charismatic and layered performances made La’an a fan favorite. La’an has been part of all 30 episodes of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds seasons 1 to 3 thus far, and it’s a safe bet that Christina Chong plays La’an in all of the next two seasons.

What Happens To La’an When Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Is Over?

Christina Chong playing Lt. La’an Noonien-Singh until the end of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will ultimately answer the biggest question about her: What happens to La’an when Captain James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) takes over the USS Enterprise from Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount)?

La’an Noonien-Singh was one of the brand-new characters created for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, along with Lt. Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia). Since neither character appears in Star Trek: The Original Series, Strange New Worlds must explain how and why they exit Captain Kirk’s Starship Enterprise.

Meanwhile, La’an’s best friend and mentor, Lt. Commander Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn), also doesn’t continue aboard the USS Enterprise under Captain Kirk. One possibility is that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will end with Number One becoming Captain of her own starship, and Una takes La’an and Ortegas with her.

However, another scenario is that La’an, the descendant of Khan Noonien-Singh (Ricardo Montalban), will die. Christina Chong has even mused about wanting to play La’an’s death scene. Whether Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will boldly end with a tragedy like La’an’s death remains to be seen.
