Netflix Set To Adapt Spider-Man Comic Writer’s Graphic Novel

An adaptation of the graphic novel series Torso by the best-selling Spider-Man comic book writer, Brian Michael Bendis and Batman writer, Marc Andreyko, finally comes to fruition after twenty years of circling around Hollywood.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has secured the film rights for Torso and is moving forward with a feature movie inspired by the true-crime story. The graphic novel is about the real-life unsolved case of the Cleveland Torso Murderer in the 1930s. The Image Comics series also features art by Bendis.

While no director has been confirmed for the project yet, it already has a massive production team. Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee is reuniting with Weapons director Zach Cregger to produce the film under his banner, Subconscious. They’re joined by Alex Hedlund (Chucky) and Nick Antosca (Hannibal) of Eat the Cat, the studio behind acclaimed projects like Candy and A Friend of the Family. Bendis and Andreyko will act as the executive producers.

Torso first sparked the curiosity of Hollywood in the early 2000s. Initially, Zodiac director David Fincher was attached to helm a Paramount adaptation of the graphic novel series. Matt Damon was set to star, and a script was written by Ehren Kruger (Top Gun: Maverick). The creator of Spawn, Todd McFarlane, was on board to produce the film. However, Paramount backed out at the last minute because the budget was too high for its liking. So the film unfortunately ended up being scrapped.

Torso is a six-issue true crime limited series published by Image Comics. The story draws from real events surrounding the infamous Cleveland Torso Murderer. It follows a renowned lawman named Eliot Ness as he leads his team, the “Unknowns”, as they relentlessly try to track down the serial killer and bring him to justice. Bendis, who grew up in Cleveland, wrote the series to pay tribute to his hometown.

The series was critically acclaimed and even won an Eisner Award for Comic Book Excellence, Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition in 1999. It was nominated for an International Horror Guild award for best graphic story and three International Eagle Awards. Torso was also Bendis’ breakthrough project. The attention he received for the series led to Marvel recruiting him, where he wrote some of the best Spider-Man, Daredevil, and Fantastic Four comics.

There is currently no confirmed release date for Netflix’s Torso adaptation.
