A three-year-old Sci-Fi masterpiece is now a streaming hit, and it happens at the perfect time for the franchise. Throughout the years, the technology that was needed to bring exciting Sci-Fi worlds to life in Hollywood has evolved to stunning levels. Several Sci-Fi TV shows have started to rival the quality of even the best movie CGI.
However, there is still a major genre franchise that stands a foot above the rest when it comes to Sci-Fi and visual effects. James Cameron’s Avatar movies have proven that 3D is a thrilling tool when there is a clear vision for how it can help create an immersive world. The Sci-Fi franchise continues to impress, and it does now on streaming.
According to FlixPatrol, Avatar: The Way of Water is now the 10th most-watched movie on Disney+ globally. That happens at the perfect time for the franchise, as its sequel, Avatar: Fire and Ash, drops in theaters next week, on December 19. Interestingly, the list also includes a teaser for said film, with the brief Avatar: Fire and Ash | A Special Look in 7th place.
In terms of where it lands on the United States charts, FlixPatrol only measures the shared Top Ten for movies and TV shows in the country. On that list, Avatar: The Way of Water is nowhere to be seen. That said, it could still change as we inch closer to Avatar: Fire and Ash‘s release. As for its international performance, the Sci-Fi epic is thriving.
Avatar: The Way of Water‘s highest ranking at this moment is #6 on Disney+ for a number of countries, which include Jamaica, Haiti, the Bahamas, and more. It also shows up in other spots in the Top Ten for several countries, such as Brazil (#10), France (#8), Italy (#9), Mexico (#8), and more.
Avatar: The Way of Water racked up a massive $2.3 billion worldwide. As such, Fire and Ash is expected to continue the Sci-Fi movie franchise’s epic streak of $2 billion+ hits. Helping it are not only the excellent performance of the Fire and Ash Special Look and The Way of Water on Disney+, but also another exciting factor.
The first trailer for Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday will be released with Avatar: Fire and Ash screenings in theaters next week. As such, those wanting to get a first look at Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom can do so before three hours of pure Sci-Fi goodness. Avatar: The Way of Water‘s streaming hit status is exciting for the threequel’s potential.
