Season 5 of Abbott Elementary will be Melissa Schemmenti’s (Lisa Ann Walter) and Jacob Hill’s (Chris Perfetti) chance to shine. The colleagues grew closer after becoming roommates in season 3 and soon evolved into the friendly pair the series didn’t know it needed. In season 5, the pair’s bond will continue to grow as Jacob’s arc unfolds.
Back in June 2025, Perfetti told ScreenRant more about Jacob’s surprising friendship with Melissa, explaining there was a lot to explore between the two, and that he hopes they continue to be roommates:
“I feel like there’s more to go. There’s more to milk out of the fact that they are roommates, and so I hope that Jacob doesn’t move out anytime soon.”
While incredibly unconventional, it’s their differences that make them a dynamic duo worth exploring in season 5.
Melissa Schemmenti And Jacob Hill Are Abbott Elementary’s Best Unconventional Pair
Melissa Schemmenti and Jacob Hill are Abbott Elementary’s unlikely besties, and yet they make the perfect pair. After teaming up to be roommates in season 3, fans have been waiting for more Jacob and Melissa storylines. However, with the show’s primary focus on school, Janine (Quinta Brunson) and Gregory’s (Tyler James Williams) relationship, and the rise of Ava Coleman (Janelle James), their friendship got pushed aside.
Melissa’s tough exterior and no-nonsense personality make her an intimidating character, especially in contrast to Jacob, who is softer and more emotional. However, in a lot of ways, the two balance each other out.
Jacob’s loving and open nature makes him a standout with his students. As a friend and partner, he’s a good listener, empathetic, and someone who tries to fight against dated and conventional thinking. On the flip side, Melissa is fiercely protective and considered shady on different occasions because of her extracurricular activities outside of Abbott Elementary.
It wasn’t until Jacob and Melissa moved in with each other that they realized how much they had in common, but viewers felt shorted when there weren’t more scenes of the two together at home. Now, however, it looks like season 5 will make Melissa and Jacob a priority.
Statistically, Jacob and Melissa are the next duo that should be analyzed. Melissa and Barbara Howard (Sheryl Lee Ralph) have been dissected, as have Gregory and Janine. It’s now Melissa and Jacob’s turn.
New Elements Of Their Friendship Will Be Shown In Abbott Elementary Season 5
Season 5 of Abbott Elementary is off to a great start after premiering in October. The first episode proved that new aspects of Jacob Hill and Melissa Schemmenti’s friendship will be examined now that Melissa has transitioned from teaching second grade across the hall from Janine Teagues (Quinta Brunson) to sixth grade near Jacob.
Teaching similar-aged students has already brought the two closer at school, and now that they’re on the same floor, more scenes between the two are inevitable.
Traditionally, it’s been Melissa toughening up Jacob, preparing him for all the jabs life throws his way. In season 5, however, new elements will be shown now that it’s Jacob preparing Melissa for the next phase of kids at school.
Perfetti previously shared that season 5 of Abbott Elementary sees the cast outside of Abbott’s walls more than ever. With that being the case, more scenes in Melissa and Jacob’s home are necessary to keep the intrigue around their friendship outside of school alive.
While Melissa’s friendship with Barbara has been shown throughout Abbott Elementary, her unique bond with Jacob is a shining reminder that two people can connect despite age, differences of opinion, and lifestyle.
