The following contains spoilers for Lazarus season 1 finale.
Lazarus’ surprising season 1 ending left its audience on the edge of their seats and wondering if the show would be renewed. Although a lot of viewers considered the finale to be a cliffhanger, the show’s creator, Harlan Coben, didn’t see it that way. Unfortunately for fans expecting a second season, he said it won’t happen unless one specific condition is met.
In an earlier interview, Coben revealed that he would only ever do a second season for any of his shows if it could top the first. The creator admitted that he had never done two seasons of one show despite being offered renewals on multiple occasions. And, in a recent discussion with Us Weekly, Coben dropped the bad news that he doesn’t believe that there were any unanswered questions and that the shocking ending wasn’t meant to be a setup for more installments.
“All the questions that we start with in episode one are answered in episode six,” he explained. Coben added that, as far as he is concerned, the series is essentially “complete.” However, as disappointing as his comments sound, he didn’t completely slam the door shut on another season of Lazarus. The creator stated, “Will there be a season 2? I don’t know.”
Lazarus is an Amazon Prime horror TV series created by Coben and Danny Brocklehurst. It revolves around Joel (Sam Claflin), a forensic psychologist whose father, Dr. Jonathan Lazarus (Bill Nighy), dies by suicide. Shortly after finding his dad’s body, he begins to encounter the ghosts of his deceased patients. After realizing that all the spirits are victims of unsolved cases, Joel begins to investigate them.
In Lazarus season 1’s finale, it’s revealed that Jonathan was responsible for many of the deaths of his patients. In his twisted mind, he believed that his murders were suitable punishments for his former patients’ actions. The “ghosts” that Joel had been seeing throughout the series were actually manifestations triggered by the tapes his father left behind (recordings justifying his crimes).
The show features a massive cast starring alongside Claflin and Nighy. Kate Ashfield (Detective Alison Brown), Alexandra Roach (Jenna), David Fynn (Seth), Karla Crome (Bella), Curtis Tennant (Aidan), and Lloyd Lai (Rupert).
All six episodes of Lazarus can now be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.
