Manchester United have been handed a huge injury boost on Lisandro Martinez ahead of the season restart after the international break.
Martinez has been on the sidelines since February with a serious knee injury, but he is expected to be involved in team training later this week.
He won’t be fit to make the matchday squad against Liverpool on the road, but could be involved against Brighton or Nottingham Forest thereafter.
The Argentine may not necessarily start in either of those games. He could be eased back into action with cameo appearances to avoid any setbacks.
In the absence of Martinez, Luke Shaw has been the regular candidate on the left side of the backline. He has been unconvincing on many occasions.
The Englishman has been slow with his decision-making and Martinez’s comeback would provide an upgrade for the Red Devils in the role.
United beat Sunderland at home earlier this month, but they face a tough challenge against Liverpool. They have not won at Anfield since 2016.
