Postecoglou doesn’t fear sack after nightmare start as Nottingham Forest boss

Nottingham Forest head coach Ange Postecoglou says he does not fear the sack despite failing to win any of his opening six matches in charge of the club.

The Tricky Trees boss fell to another defeat on Thursday night, losing at home in the Europa League to FC Midtjylland.

After the highs of finishing in the European spots under Nuno Espirito Santo last term, it has been a fall from grace under the ex-Tottenham boss.

No team has conceded more goals (12) than Forest since the Australian took over, and they are languishing in the relegation zone of the Premier League.

As a result of his poor start, Forest fans could be heard singing “You’re getting sacked in the morning” during Thursday’s loss.

Speaking on his start ahead of the trip to Newcastle on Sunday, Postecoglou said: “It’s a valid assumption in modern football that there is always a manager that is under pressure – that’s just part and parcel of what we do – but I don’t think that way.

“Put it this way – I knew I was getting sacked at Tottenham about three or four months before I did, but that didn’t stop me from winning something.

“It doesn’t enter my head. My responsibility lies in making sure this football club progresses and gets to a position where it can challenge for things.

“If I start putting timelines to that or worry about what is going to happen next week then I am not performing the role I have been given.

“I just don’t think it is helpful to anyone. At the end of the day, I have to concentrate on the environment, the training, the way we play, and as I said last night, I am still very, very strong in my belief that we are not too far away.”

Personnel problem?

When pushed further, Postecoglou admitted his players still need to shift their mentality to correctly implement his football.

He added: “It seems to be the mindset of the players that first we need to get punished [before we start to compete]. We are letting ourselves down in key areas in football that change football matches.

“You have got to be honest with your feedback. There is no point in masking over the opportunities we have let slip in the last few games. We could been sitting here in a much better decision, with a totally different mindset in key moments of games.

“If you accept it or just hope it is going to change then I don’t think that is going to work. The players know exactly how I feel about it.

“I would be surprised if anyone hasn’t seen a change. Results to one side – I know that’s the ultimate measure – but there’s plenty of evidence we have changed the fundamentals around how we do stuff.

“We are still in the stage of discovery around players. We need time to change things. I would be very surprised if anyone thought it would be an overnight thing.

“As results haven’t followed there’s always a question mark over whether the change has been a good one or not.

“If I had to pinpoint it. It hasn’t been the change in playing style that hasn’t allowed us to win games. It’s been the lack of focus in key moments.”
