Where To Get Every Weapon

Ghost of Yotei is exceptionally similar to its predecessor, the excellent Ghost of Tsushima, but a key departure is the sequel’s introduction of melee weapons other than the katana for Atsu to wield. Atsu’s myriad weapons effectively fill the same role as Jin Sakai’s various stances – you quick-swap between them in battle to counter certain enemy types. Unlocking every weapon, however, is a task that spans most of the game.

[Warning: Progression & minor story spoilers for Ghost of Yotei.]

Atsu has a total of five melee options; each is associated with a major questline in Ghost of Yotei‘s wandering samurai experience. Her arsenal also extends beyond these melee weapons to include multiple ranged options and quickfire tools. How to acquire all of Atsu’s gear is delineated below, a trek that will take you to every corner of Yotei‘s expansive Ezo.

How To Get The Dual Katanas

Hanbei

Seeking out the Dual Katana master is one of the first major leads you get in Ghost of Yotei, and should be in your rumor cards (the quest log in the bottom left corner of the map) as soon as you’re set loose in the Yotei Grasslands after the introductory sequence in which Atsu kills the Snake. You need to track down Hanbei, a retired bounty hunter and an acquaintance of Atsu’s father who lives a secluded life beyond a mountain trail on the west edge of the Yotei Grasslands.

The map above shows where the mountain trail begins, almost directly west of Atsu’s home. You’ll do some climbing before finding Hanbei’s hermitage, which will then be followed by a few cutscenes and a training montage in which Hanbei throws coals at you, which need to be deflected quickly. This is to show you the speed advantage gained by wielding two katanas – use the Dual Katanas against enemies holding polearms, like spears or glaives.

How To Get The Odachi

Master Yoshida

The Odachi is likely the second melee weapon you will obtain. You get it from Master Yoshida, whose dojo is located in the northern section of Tokachi Range. Tokachi Range is contiguous with the Yotei Grasslands – the two combine into a massive hub area of sorts, and you will not need to travel to another zone to acquire the Odachi. The map above shows the exact location of Master Yoshida’s Dojo near Horosaru Falls.

Getting the Odachi is more straightforward; there will be a short training sequence, then you’ll help Master Yoshida defend the dojo from Saito Outlaws. The Odachi is a large, two-handed blade that you use against brute enemies, which are larger than most foes.

How To Get The Kusarigama

Master Enomoto

In order to get the Kusarigama, you will have to travel through two separate zones. Head north out of Tokachi Range and take the ferry across the Great Lake into Nayoro Wilds. Continue north through the Nayoro Wilds, and travel to Teshio Ridge, Ezo’s snowy region. You’ll then need to go even further north to Master Enomoto’s Dojo (see the map above), beyond the Hakodake Mountains.

Master Enomoto has a training montage similar to Hanbei’s, where he teaches Atsu to endure Teshio Ridge’s icy climate. Teshio Ridge is where you’ll hunt down the Kitsune, one of the Yotei Six and Lord Saito’s shinobi spymaster. Once you have the Kusarigama, a sickle attached to a metal ball via a chain, use it against enemies holding shields – strong attacks will break them. The Kusarigama is also useful for assassinating unaware enemies from a distance.

How To Get The Yari

Sensei Takahashi

Acquiring the Yari – a traditional Japanese spear – also requires traveling to a separate zone. In the northwestern corner of Yotei Grasslands, you’ll find a pass that leads to Ishikari Plain, where you’ll become more familiar with the Matsumae, the samurai clan battling Saito’s forces. You’ll likely gather a rumor about Sensei Takahashi, who is also at odds with Saito.

Takahashi is not, however, at his dojo, pictured above, when you first reach Ishikari Plain (if you don’t have the rumor leading to Sensei Takahashi, you can pick it up by visiting his dojo). You instead need to find him on Modaiwa Island off the western coast of Ishikari Plain. Takahashi’s training sequence involves spearing fish, but once you have the new weapon, use the Yari against dual-wielding enemies, like those holding two sickles or a Kusarigama.

Where To Get Every Ranged Weapon

Bows, Bombs, & Guns

Atsu’s ranged weaponry is similarly dispersed throughout Ezo, though not always tied to major questlines like the principal melee weapons. Throughout Ghost of Yotei, you can acquire a Hankyu (medium bow), a Yumi (long bow), Scorch Bombs and Blind Bombs, and a Tanegashima (a matchlock rifle). Here’s where to find each one:

Hankyu & Yumi

The two bows become available almost immediately; all you have to do is buy them from Ran the Bowyer. Ran can typically be found in each region’s inn, and may visit you while you’re in camp. The earliest place you can get the Hankyu and Yumi is at Yotei’s Shadow Inn, which is northwest of Atsu’s home in the Yotei Grasslands, and easily accessible at the beginning of the game.

Scorch Bombs & Blind Bombs

You can acquire two throwable bombs in Ishikari Plain, where you go to hunt down the Oni. Both will be acquired from Ina the Bomb Maker, who is closely associated with Sensei Takahashi’s quest group. Ina can be found in Fire Cricket Canyon in the southwest corner of Ishikari Plain. You’ll get the Scorch Bombs first (which explode and light enemies on fire), and the Blind Bombs a short while later (these disorient enemies).

Tanegashima

Ghost of Yotei saves the matchlock rifle for fairly late in the game. When searching for the Saito Brothers – the Dragon and the Spider – you’ll eventually make your way to Oshima Coast. This part of the story cannot be accessed until you’ve crossed the Kitsune and the Oni off Atsu’s sash. You’ll be given the Tanegashima during the main questline, so it’s impossible to miss.

Where To Get Every Quickfire Weapon

Shinobi Tools

The final set of weapons available to Atsu in Ghost of Yotei is an assortment of quickfire tools used by pressing R1. You have Metsubushi, a powder to blind enemies in the midst of combat; Kunai, throwing knives that can be used with certain armor sets to extend Chain Assassinations; Smoke Bombs, to stun enemies and obscure Atsu; Oni’s Flame, an oil to temporarily light your melee weapon on fire; and the Tanzutsu, a matchlock pistol that can add to your kill streak in standoffs.

Metsubushi

Atsu’s blinding powder can be found very early in the game, before you leave the Yotei Grasslands. It’s associated with a bounty, and the wanted rōnin will try to use it against you in your duel.

Kunai

You will find Kunai in Teshio Ridge, obtained in the course of fighting the Nine Tails, the Kitsune’s shinobi league. A woman named Hana will request your help in defending her farms – the easiest to get to first is the Contested Farm southeast of Red Crane Inn. Hana will give you Kunai and sell you upgrades.

Smoke Bomb

Yotei‘s Smoke Bombs are also acquired in Teshio Ridge as part of the main quest. You’ll come into contact with a Shamisen player named Oyuki at the Red Crane Inn; continue working with Oyuki against the Kitsune and she’ll eventually give you the Smoke Bombs.

Oni’s Flame

Oni’s Flame is similarly associated with the main quest in Ishikari Plain. Working with Sensei Takahashi, Ina the Bomb Maker, and Jubei to undermine the Oni’s rule, you’ll fight enemies who can alight their weapons, shortly after which you’ll gain access to the ability.

Tanzutsu

Unlike the Tanegashima, you’ll have to seek out the Tanzutsu. It can be acquired by going to Matchlock Murata’s Workshop in Oshima Coast (see the map above). Murata has a short quest associated with the pistol, which is the last weapon you will receive in Ghost of Yotei.
