IND vs WI [WATCH]: Jasprit Bumrah outfoxes John Campbell with an absolute peach on Day 1 of the Ahmedabad Test

India stamped their authority early on Day 1 of the first Test against West Indies at Ahmedabad as Jasprit Bumrah produced a moment of brilliance to dismiss John Campbell, setting the tone for a dominant session. The first Test kicked off the West Indies tour of India 2025, with the hosts looking to start the series on a high in front of an enthusiastic Ahmedabad crowd.

Jasprit Bumrah produces a brilliant delivery to send back John Campbell

After West Indies opted to bat, India wasted no time in making inroads thanks to Bumrah’s exceptional skill with the new ball. The decisive moment arrived in the seventh over of the morning as Bumrah, operating with precision and subtle movement, bowled a delivery angled just outside off-stump to Campbell. The ball kissed the outside edge as Campbell’s bat spun onto his pad, creating a faint noise that led to muted celebrations from the Indian fielders. Initially given not out, the decision was overturned on review after clear evidence showed the ball brushing the edge before Dhruv Jurel completed a sharp catch behind the stumps.

The wicket of Campbell, who had looked determined during his 8 off 19 balls, put the visitors under pressure at 20 for 2. Bumrah’s figures at that stage – three overs for just eight runs and a wicket – highlighted his control and threat. Campbell’s dismissal was a classic example of Bumrah’s relentless probing as he extracted the slightest deviation from the pitch to produce a delivery that was almost unplayable. The intensity in Indian celebrations reflected just how significant an early breakthrough could be in such a big series, especially after the drama of the review process.

India dominate opening session against West Indies in Ahmedabad

India continued to dictate terms through the first session with Mohammed Siraj providing excellent support from the other end. Siraj removed Tagenarine Chanderpaul for a duck before quickly following up with the scalps of Brandon King and Alick Athanaze, leaving the West Indies reeling at 42 for 4 before the first drinks break. The visitors managed to reach 90/5 at the end of a first session with Roston Chase at the crease, but the signs were ominous for the rest of the batting order.

The Indian seamers maintained relentless pressure using the bounce and carry on offer at Narendra Modi Stadium. Siraj ended the session with impressive figures, while Bumrah’s economy and menace were key in keeping the West Indies on the back foot. The early wickets and disciplined lines forced the visiting batters into survival mode as India’s bowlers extracted assistance from the surface right from the outset.
