Liverpool are looking to sign Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano in January following a long-term injury for Giovanni Leoni, according to journalist Ekrem Konur.
The Merseyside giants suffered an unfortunate setback during the Carabao Cup third round against Southampton at Anfield in midweek. Leoni had a fine debut, but he ended up sustaining a serious knee injury.
The Italian has been ruled out for at least 12 months and this is expected to see the Reds spend big on a new central defender when the transfer window reopens in January 2026.
Konur cites that the Reds are lining up an approach for Upamecano amid his contract stand-off at Bayern. The Frenchman will enter the last six months of his Bayern deal this winter.
Bayern won’t want to lose him on a free transfer and could be prepared to sanction his sale for around 35 million euros in January. Real Madrid are also monitoring his situation before the turn of the year.
