A trip to Levante should not hold too many fears for Madrid but Alonso was understandably willing to praise the opposition, saying: “Any game is complicated and they are competitive, as is their coach. Tomorrow we will have to do many things well: play with quality, rhythm and concentration.

“The results help us to have confidence on the road but there are no secrets. We must play collectively so that everyone benefits from it.”

Madrid are likely to dominate the ball again and Alonso is hoping they can carry more goal threat than they did with 72 per cent possession against Espanyol.

He added: “The other day was difficult for us to find more in the last third, but we have talked and will try to correct what we can do. You have to prepare all the phases of a game. Data is data, but the interpretation may be different.”

Levante have won just one of their first five league games but will come into this clash full of confidence after beating Girona 4-0 at the weekend.

Coach Julian Calero, who worked previously for Madrid, is excited by the challenge of facing his former club.

He said: “If you win the previous game you have the feeling of coming in better, not only in the emotional aspect, but also in the soccer aspect. That said, we know who we are facing and tomorrow we are going to face the game with great enthusiasm, with a lot of desire and with the intention of giving our fans the best football we have.

“Our idea is to see how far we can compete with the ocean liner that is Real Madrid. It is clear that we know their potential and it is a team that has six out of six [wins], five in the league and one in the Champions League. They have conceded two goals, none in open play, one penalty and one corner. They are doing many things well and we know who we are facing. We want our people to feel proud.”

Calero was not interested in Levante simply making up the numbers, however.

He added: “I refuse to be the little one who plays against the big one and how beautiful this is. We are going to compete because we are in the First Division and in our home. Let’s try to compete in the game as best we can.

“Obviously it is a nice game for the fan and very difficult for the coaching staff and the players. We are aware of who we are facing. We don’t want to see things as a prize, we are here because the players have deserved it and I want them to see this as a challenge to continue growing. You have to look the rival in the eyes. We are facing a heavyweight, one of the most important clubs in the world. If you go with fear, they will defeat you.”

Vinicius Jr is likely to retain his place ahead of fellow Brazilian Rodrygo.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Antonio Rudiger and Ferland Mendy remain sidelined but Dean Huijsen is available after serving a one-game ban at the weekend.

Arda Guler may be recalled at the expense of Gonzalo Garcia.
