Earlier this year, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners was released to critical acclaim and box office success. The horror film stars Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers Elijah “Smoke” Moore and Elias “Stack” Moore, two veterans who turn an old sawmill into a joke joint. Things take a turn for the brothers when the Irish vampire Remmick (Jack O’Connell) arrives.
The rest of the Sinners cast includes Miles Caton, Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, and Delroy Lindo. It was a runaway success with a 97% critic score and 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Likewise, it performed well financially, earning a worldwide haul of $366.7 million. Sinners was so popular and well-received that it has even received some Oscar buzz.
At the time it concluded its theatrical run, Sinners was the top-grossing horror movie of 2025. However, a new contender has risen above it at the box office.
Another Horror Movie Has Taken Sinners’ Title Of Highest-Grossing Horror Movie of 2025
Released on September 3, 2025, The Conjuring: Last Rites has been a juggernaut at the box office, becoming the highest-grossing within that franchise. Alternatively, its reception was more mixed than that of Sinners. Its audience score was a respectable 78%, while its critic score was a lower 59%.
Starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, the film opened to $84 million domestically, against a budget of $55 million, making it an instant success financially. Now, as of September 21, it sits at roughly $400 million worldwide.
As such, it has usurped Sinners, but breaking down their respective box office hauls highlights some interesting details. Sinners grossed 76% ($278.6 million) of its box office domestically alone. Comparatively, Last Rites has earned 37.8% ($151.2 million) domestically and 62.2% ($248.8 million) worldwide, meaning that its global appeal is boosting its numbers.
Our Take On The Conjuring: Last Rites Overtaking Sinners As Highest-Grossing Horror Movie of 2025
Though it has lost the title of highest-grossing horror movie of 2025, Sinners is still a huge success for Coogler and the cast. Though it did have a higher budget than Last Rites at $90 million, its $366.7 million haul means it broke even on costs and then some. Moreover, Sinners’ critical acclaim, coupled with its soundtrack, set it up to be a horror classic for years to come.
Last Rites occupies a more stereotypical horror niche. As part of a long-running franchise with a substantial fanbase, its success is hardly a surprise. While only one can take the record, there is more than enough space for Sinners and The Conjuring: Last Rites in the horror genre.
