Gen V has introduced the mysterious Project Odessa in season 2’s early episodes, which has prompted viewers to come up with multiple theories about what it could mean. Since the supe project seemingly ties into the show’s main story beat, Gen V season 2 will take time to reveal its true meaning and purpose.
However, in its opening moments itself, Gen V season 2 has dropped enough subtle clues to leave room for speculations and theories. Eagle-eyed viewers have also noticed that Project Odessa was previously referred to in The Boys season 4 and Gen V season 1, paving the way for even more compelling theories.
Some viewers even believe that the project might be a reference to a real-world post-World War II operation, which makes it even more interesting. Regardless of what Project Odessa will turn out to be, it is fun to speculate on its significance and meaning before Gen V season 2 unveils the truth.
Project Odessa Has Something To Do With A Real-World Nazi Escape Plan
ODESSA was also the name of an alleged organization after World War II, including former SS members. The believed motive of the organization was to plot and facilitate escape routes for SS officers to ensure they could avoid prosecution after World War II. While many experts deny the existence of an official Project ODESSA, Gen V might be drawing inspiration from the speculated operation.
In Gen V season 2’s early episodes, Emma and Polarity find a hidden room in the Godolkin library that contains Nazi memorabilia. Moments later, in the same room, Emma discovers a file about Project Odessa, which hints at Marie’s connection to it. The fact that they found the file in a “Nazi room” alone hints at the project’s connection to the real ODESSA.
Odessa Has More To Do With Annabeth & Less With Marie
When Marie looks for more clues surrounding her connection to Project Odessa in Gen V season 2, she learns that her parents were struggling to get pregnant. However, after seeking help from Cipher and his IVF treatment, who went by the name Dr. Gold back then, they were able to bring her into the world.
She not only learns that Cipher was present during her birth but also gets to know that her younger sister, Annabeth, was considered a miracle child because her parents did not require IVF before her conception. This raises suspicion surrounding how Cipher’s IVF treatment might have been used to selectively manipulate genetic traits or even engineer certain abilities in the children.
Many viewers also believe Cipher may be Thomas Godolkin, given how his old picture with Marie suggests he does not age.
If Marie were the main subject of Project Odessa, Cipher would have pursued her a long time ago and not waited for her to discover her powers and join Godolkin University. The fact that Annabeth was taken away before she could live her life as a normal supe suggests she might be the main subject of the project.
The Project’s Motive Is To Turn Supes Into Gods
The quote below Thomas Godolkin’s statue at Godolkin University says, “The path shall begin here where mortals shall become gods.” This line itself could be a clue about Project Odessa’s true purpose, hinting that its motive is to turn supes into godly beings. Despite having supernatural powers, supes still have shortcomings and can be killed by humans.
Cipher, too, keeps reminding his students that powerless humans could easily defeat them by merely outnumbering them in a showdown. Through Odessa, Cipher hopes to make a few selected supes so incredibly overpowered and strong that regular humans would be forced to crown them as gods.
Project Odessa Aims To Create More “Stable” Supes
Gen V season 2’s violent opening scene shows how a bunch of scientists used a strange serum to acquire supe abilities. However, their experiment led to disastrous consequences, resulting in the deaths of all the involved individuals. This scene seems to highlight how Compound V rarely works on adults.
Cipher probably hopes that Marie will harness the true potential of her blood-bending abilities and reach a point where she can help stabilize Compound V in all individuals. Once that is achieved, Cipher would be able to create a superior race of humanity by giving access to Compound V to as many humans as possible.
The whole idea of creating a superior race would also align with Cipher’s hinted Nazi connection in Gen V.
