Top Contenders For Prime Video’s God Of War

A rumor suggests that a few prospects have already been narrowed down for the role of Kratos in Prime Video‘s upcoming God of War adaptation. Even though no official announcements surrounding the highly anticipated game adaptation’s casting have been made yet, the rumored list includes some promising names.

With Ronald D. Moore as its showrunner, Prime Video’s God of War is still in the early stages of its development. However, the showrunner has confirmed that it will primarily be based on the Norse saga, adapting the mythos of the 2018 God of War game and its sequel, God of War Ragnarök. The showrunner has also hinted that the show will heavily focus on Kratos and his relationship with his son, Atreus.

The video game’s director, Corey Barlog, is also involved with the series’ production and is actively working on its development with the writers. Although all seems good for the show, so far, its casting could potentially make or break it. Interestingly, a rumored list of actors who could potentially play Kratos has been floating around online, and it includes some great prospects.

Christopher Judge

Age: 60 Height: 6 ft 3 in

Since Christopher Judge voiced Kratos in God of War (2018) and its sequel, God of War Ragnarök (2022), it is not surprising that he is being speculated as a potential casting choice for the show. Judge, however, recently addressed the rumors surrounding his casting, suggesting that he has not been in talks with the show’s creators so far.

Viewers familiar with the games would love to see him as the character, and even in terms of appearance and physicality, he seems to be a great fit for the role. However, some viewers have argued that they would rather have him voice Kratos in future games instead of seeing him play the character in a risky small-screen adaptation.

Jason Momoa

Solely based on his intense appearance, screen presence, and roles in shows like Game of Thrones, Jason Momoa was often fancast as Kratos in a potential God of War adaptation. However, the actor has further risen in the ranks as a prospect after his brilliant portrayal of Ka’iana in Apple TV+’s Chief of War.

Dave Bautista

Age: 56 Height: 6 ft 3 in

Since Kratos is a figure from Greek mythology, half-Greek actor Dave Bautista has also been one of the most highly rumored prospects for the role. Bautista has already put his acting range on full display with projects like Blade Runner 2049, Dune, and Glass Onion, which proves he would perfectly portray the depth of Kratos’ anger, remorse, and desire for redemption.

Although he has lost some pounds in recent years, he still seems big enough to play Kratos in the upcoming adaptation. After his departure from the MCU, God of War would also give him the opportunity to have another big franchise on his portfolio.

Winston Duke

Age: 38 Height: 6 ft 5 in

After portraying M’Baku in Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Winston Duke is set to reprise his role in Avengers: Doomsday. If he ends up getting cast as Kratos in God of War, he would have another massive franchise under his belt, cementing him as a versatile leading man in big-budget fantasy movies and TV projects.

Joe Manganiello

Age: 48 Height: 6 ft 5 in

Joe Manganiello’s career was about to reach a new milestone when he was cast as Deathstroke in Zack Snyder’s DCU. He even had an extended appearance in Snyder’s 2021 cut of Justice League. Unfortunately, Snyder’s universe was eventually scrapped, leading to Manganiello losing the part.

Amazon has already ordered two seasons of the show, hinting at the streamer’s plans of investing long-term in the adaptation.

With Kratos, Manganiello would have the perfect opportunity to show his potential as a leading man. From a physical standpoint, the actor already seems to have what it takes to play the role. Standing at 6 feet 5 inches, he has a naturally brawny physique that would make him look like a convincing Kratos.

Paul Levesque (Triple H)

Age: 56 Height: 6 ft 2 in

With his latest WWE bald and bearded look, Triple H already resembles Kratos in more ways than one. Physically, too, the WWE legend carries the kind of imposing frame and raw power that would make him a believable embodiment of Kratos. However, owing to his limited acting experience, it is arguable whether he would be the ideal casting choice for the role, even though he is on the rumored list.

Manu Bennett

Age: 55 Height: 5 ft 10 in

As both Crixus in Spartacus and Slade Wilson/Deathstroke in Arrow, Manu Bennett showed his potential to play a powerful, anti-heroic character with ease. His previous roles make it hard not to believe he would be able to perfectly capture the duality of rage and regret in Kratos’ characterization if he gets to play the character in the live-action God of War.

Physically, though, Bennett seems to be on the shorter side of the spectrum compared to other rumored prospects. Since Kratos is supposed to be tall and broad, some adjustments would likely be necessary to convey the character’s imposing stature if Bennett lands the part.

Olivier Richters

Age: 36 Height: 7 ft 2 in

For a long time, Olivier Ritchters was under the radar and hardly considered for any leading roles. However, following his appearance as Paulie in Reacher season 3, the actor has garnered more mainstream attention. When it comes to sheer physicality, the Dutch Giant almost seems perfect for the role.

Olivier Richters has also previously cosplayed as Kratos:

Standing at 7 feet 2 inches and weighing close to 350 pounds, the actor has all the physical traits to appear godly on the small screen. Interestingly, Richters has been eyeing the role for quite some time and has previously stated that Kratos would be his dream role. If not Kratos, he would love to play Týr or Thor in the live-action series.

Travis Fimmel

Best known for his unforgettable portrayal of the fierce and battle-hardened warrior, Ragnar Lothbrok, in Vikings, Travis Fimmel is another major prospect for the role of Kratos, according to the rumored list. Although he does not exactly share Kratos’ massive size and appearance, he has the intensity and screen presence to believably play the character on the small screen.

Henry Cavill

Henry Cavill has been linked with many a fantasy TV and movie projects following his departure from the DCU and Netflix’s Witcher franchise. God of War is just another upcoming series that is being linked with his name. Since Cavill has expressed his love for gaming on more than one occasion, he would likely be open to portraying the character.

However, considering how he is already a part of many upcoming movies and shows, he may not be able to accommodate another long-term TV project into his schedule. His confirmed involvement with Amazon’s upcoming Warhammer 40,000 series may also hold him back from playing Kratos in the same streaming service’s God of War.
