The original Harry Potter director is totally correct in his most recent critique of HBO’s remake. The Harry Potter HBO remake has stirred up controversy from the start, and now, with filming in progress for season 1, set photos and behind-the-scenes news are being released practically every week, adding fuel to the flame.
Chris Columbus, the filmmaker behind the first and second Harry Potter films, whose work established what the Wizarding World looks like in the cultural zeitgeist, has had his share of comments regarding the new production. Recently, Columbus shared his take on the new Hagrid, played by Nick Frost.
The casting of Nick Frost was primarily celebrated by fans, but Columbus was one of many to notice the similarities in the character’s design to that of the original film. Commenting on the similarities between Frost’s Hagrid and Robbie Coltrane’s interpretation, Chris Columbus said, “What’s the point? I thought everything was going to be different, but it’s more of the same.”
Chris Columbus Is Right About HBO’s Hagrid Similarities Highlighting A Bigger Remake Problem
“What’s the point?” is a compelling question, and one that’s been on audiences’ minds since the remake was announced. The Harry Potter films ended just 14 years ago. They still hold up to modern standards, and they’re widely accepted as the definitive adaptations of this franchise.
One could make a case for a new version of a beloved franchise with a drastic tone or style shift. For example, movies like Batman Begins and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish brought their respective franchises back after years and painted them in a new light. That doesn’t seem to be what the HBO series is doing.
Hagrid’s appearance is a worrying indicator of redundancy.
It’s undeniable that the new version of Hagrid was inspired by the version in Chris Columbus’ film, and that’s not because the HBO show is just copying them; it’s because the original already did it so well. Those films brought these characters to life flawlessly, and that makes it nearly impossible to start fresh without criticism.
A significant component of the Harry Potter TV series’ opportunity to distinguish itself from the movies is a new aesthetic. Hagrid’s appearance is a worrying indicator of redundancy.
Harry Potter’s TV Show Needs To Strike The Right Balance Of Nostalgia & Novelty
Harry Potter’s HBO adaptation needs to justify its existence with some semblance of originality, but it also can’t risk alienating long-time fans. We’ve seen so many fantasy adaptations push book readers away by diverting from the source material in ways that didn’t work. Harry Potter’s fan base is too big and too loyal to get away with that.
Some aspect of familiarity is integral, as nostalgia will be a massive component of marketing this series. Those who grew up watching and reading Harry Potter will not only look forward to embarking on a journey in the Wizarding World through a new lens, but also to the opportunity to share it with their children.
