WATCH: Sanju Samson lights up KCL with 42-ball ton; sends strong reminder to Gautam Gambhir ahead of Asia Cup 2025

The Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram witnessed a breathtaking display of power-hitting as Sanju Samson smashed a whirlwind knock in the Kerala Cricket League (KCL) 2025. Playing for Kochi Blue Tigers against Aries Kollam Sailors, the local hero not only scripted history with his explosive batting but also reignited the debate around his place in India’s Asia Cup squad. With the tournament just weeks away, Sanju’s innings has put Indian team management in a position where ignoring his form may not be an option.

A knock to remember for Sanju Samson

Sanju began his innings in trademark style—fearless and free-flowing. He reached his half-century in just 16 deliveries, the fastest in KCL history, and went on to complete his hundred in 42 balls. His strike-filled innings of 121 runs included 14 crisp boundaries and 7 towering sixes, leaving the Kollam Sailors bowlers with no answers. From drives down the ground to audacious pulls and lofted hits, the crowd was treated to the full range of Sanju’s talent. Adding to the charm of the moment was his celebration—calm and composed—shared with his elder brother, Saly Samson, who was at the non-striker’s end.

Last-ball drama seals it for Kochi Blue Tigers

Though Sanju departed in the 19th over with 31 runs still needed, the game had more twists in store. Youngster Muhammad Ashik turned hero, smashing a six off the final ball to complete a record KCL chase. The four-wicket victory not only put Kochi Blue Tigers’ on top of the table but also highlighted Sanju’s pivotal role in laying the foundation for the win.

Sanju gives Asia Cup selection reminder to India head coach Gautam Gambhir

Sanju’s century came at a critical juncture. With Shubman Gill’s return creating uncertainty around the opening slot, questions have swirled over Sanju’s position in India’s Asia Cup lineup. Critics have often pointed to his inconsistency, while supporters emphasize his unmatched ability to turn games in India’s favour.

Gautam Gambhir, who once hailed Sanju as ‘the best young batter in Indian cricket’ will now be under pressure to consider current form over team combinations. On social media, fans called this knock a bold statement, insisting that dropping him after such innings would be unjustifiable.
