Perhaps one of the biggest family-friendly franchises in gaming, LEGO, is getting yet another addition to its lineup, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. This incredible title is already shaping up to be one of LEGO‘s best games yet, based on early footage and announcements that have been shared thus far, but not everyone will get to enjoy it.
Unfortunately, while this is no doubt going to be a major hit for families, one home console won’t have the luxury of offering it to its players. So far, Legacy of the Dark Knight has been announced for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, but not the original Nintendo Switch.
The New LEGO Batman Isn’t Coming To Switch
LEGO Batman Is Already Leaving The Original Switch Behind
While LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is coming to Nintendo platforms, it will only be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2, not the original Nintendo Switch. Given that several games have already been released exclusively on the Switch 2, it’s not entirely shocking that Legacy of the Dark Knight is choosing to opt solely for the better-performing platform, but it is still likely to impact sales.
LEGO games are typically family games, and although the Nintendo Switch 2 has been released for a couple of months now, many are still struggling to get their hands on one, either due to financial reasons or a lack of availability. Plus, even aside from that, family consoles, which the Switch is for a lot of people, don’t generally get upgraded in households as quickly as consoles that are prioritized for personal use.
So, Legacy of the Dark Knight stands to miss out on tons of sales by not offering the game on the Nintendo Switch as well as the Nintendo Switch 2. Yes, the Nintendo Switch would arguably not have run it as well as the Nintendo Switch 2, but as has been done with other games, a version of the game could have been formatted for the original Switch if TT Games & Warner Bros. had wanted to do it.
Developers Are Starting To Move On From The Switch
The Shift Away From Last Gen Consoles Is Happening Quickly For Nintendo
Although LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight not being on the Nintendo Switch in and of itself is disappointing news, what is perhaps more concerning is what this likely means in the grand scheme of games on Nintendo platforms. If a handful of games are already opting to make the full transition to Nintendo Switch 2 and omit the Nintendo Switch players completely, it means other games will likely follow suit.
Since Pokémon Legends: Z-A is launching on both consoles, alongside several other games, I assumed we might’ve had a bit more time before players were going to be forced to upgrade. After all, most developers still made PS4 and Xbox 360 compatible games years after the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S were released due to shortages of the newer systems, but that doesn’t seem to be the case for Nintendo.
Of course, that could have something to do with the fact that the Nintendo Switch isn’t built to run most modern releases. Most developers may not see the point in creating what would essentially be a worse version of their game just to run it on a console that was never designed to handle it in the first place.
So, while I see why the shift is happening so soon for Nintendo when it didn’t for Sony or Microsoft platforms, it doesn’t change the fact that it’s going to be unfortunate for a lot of people. That being said, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight doesn’t have an official release date yet and is planned for 2026, so a lot could happen between now and then.
