Netflix’s Untamed has already proven a huge success for the streamer, but it will soon have some stiff competition from HBO’s upcoming crime series. Shortly after its release, Untamed topped Netflix’s charts and became the streaming hit of the summer, surpassing popular shows like American Primeval and Ransom Canyon.
Thanks to this popularity, Netflix renewed Untamed for season 2 less than two weeks after its premiere. While the ending of Untamed season 1 wrapped the show’s story up quite nicely, this renewal gives Untamed a great opportunity to expand on its premise even more. HBO’s similar upcoming series may create a new rival first, though.
HBO’s Upcoming Series Task Is Another Dark Crime Thriller Like Untamed
Coming just a few short months after Untamed found massive success on Netflix, HBO will soon be releasing its own similar crime series, Task. Task was created by Brad Ingelsby, and it stars Mark Ruffalo as Tom, an FBI agent tasked with leading a team to apprehend the individuals behind a series of violent robberies.
Task‘s newly released trailer shows Ruffalo’s Tom battling against his own demons while working with a young squad of agents to catch the culprit. The trailer also hints that the series will give insight into the lives of the robbers as well, highlighting the divide between their violent actions and daily lives.
The dark, gritty tone that is already on full display will make Task a great rival for Untamed. The trailer hints at the imperfections of Ruffalo’s character and his comsuming desire to find the robbers, even if it comes at a cost. Task also looks to include some thrilling action sequences to balance out its more emotionally heavy moments.
HBO’s Task May Already Have A Leg Up On Untamed
Netflix’s crime dramas have improved steadily in recent years, with shows like Adolescence showcasing just how great the streamer’s offerings can be. Untamed‘s success is indicative of this change, despite having room for improvement. However, HBO’s legacy in the genre is what really gives Task a leg up going into its release.
It is very uncommon for TV shows to have a perfect first season, so Untamed‘s minor issues shouldn’t really be a long-term problem. With that being said, though, it does mean that the show needs to grow into the expectations that it set during season 1, especially with the new competition from Task.
HBO’s crime shows, from The Sopranos to True Detective, are notoriously great, and the team behind Task certainly points it in the right direction. The series comes from Brad Ingelsby, who also created Mare of Easttown, one of HBO’s best recent crime shows.
Given the creative team behind Task and the promising cast, Untamed season 2 is going to have a lot to live up to. Luckily, Untamed‘s rugged natural setting gives the series its own edge, and its open ending means that audiences can follow Kyle Turner into a completely new and exciting investigation in season 2.
