Weapons Director Zach Cregger Teases Potential Sequel Possibilities

Warning: The following article contains SPOILERS for WeaponsDirector Zach Cregger addresses potentially making another Weapons. The horror movie unravels a mystery surrounding seventeen children, all from the same elementary school classroom, who disappeared one night at 2:17 a.m. The cast includes Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Cary Christopher, Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, Austin Abrams, and Amy Madigan.

Successfully hiding nearly every major secret, especially Gladys (Madigan), Weapons has continued to drum up excitement. Now that it premiered, the movie is receiving praise, boasting a 95% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, and will likely become a commercial hit.

During an interview with Variety, Cregger discussed possibly returning to the Weapons universe. The director expressed interest in creating another project occurring in the same world, and revealed that he already has something in mind. However, Cregger noted that he would not be quick to make it. Read his comments below:

Definitely. I’ve actually … it’s funny you asked that. I can’t help it: I have another idea for something in this world that I’m kind of excited about. I’m not going to do it next, and I probably won’t do it after my next movie, but I do have one and I’d like to see it on the screen one day.

What This Means For Weapons

Based on his comments, it is unclear what kind of story Cregger has concocted and whether it directly relates to his latest horror outing or simply exists in the same universe. However, Weapons contains several lingering mysteries that another movie could potentially shed light on.

The next movie from Zach Cregger, who also wrote and directed Barbarian, will be a Resident Evil reboot.

What happened to Alex (Christopher) and his classmates was briefly mentioned at the end of Weapons. Still, audiences may be interested in learning more about them and how Justine Gandy (Garner) is coping years later. There are also many questions surrounding Gladys and her mysterious exploits, before threatening Alex and completely upending Maybrook.

Because Gladys was using witchcraft as a means to alleviate her ailments and control the residents of Maybrook, it is worth wondering how long she had been doing this and what the extent of her abilities are. It’s never revealed where Gladys got her powers, or where her tree came from, but those are areas another Weapons movie could explore.

Our Take On Weapons 2

Given the compelling hook of Weapons and how secretive the film has been, it would be interesting to see what direction Cregger goes in for a potential sequel, or what bizarre and horrifying scenarios could connect it.

Regardless of whether another movie answers any questions about Gladys and other characters, possibly placing it in the same universe as Weapons could mean that magic is at play. Cregger has proven capable of delivering haunting stories and so, for fans of the director, his latest comments should create excitement.
