“It was a…”: Harbhajan Singh gets candid about Sreesanth’s daughter’s emotional confrontation

In the vibrant tapestry of Indian Premier League history, few moments have been as infamous or as widely discussed as the 2008 slapgate incident involving Harbhajan Singh and S. Sreesanth. The confrontation, which erupted after a high-voltage encounter between Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians in Mohali, resulted in Harbhajan being suspended for the rest of the season and cast a shadow that lingered for years.

Recently, Harbhajan revisited this episode, revealing how deeply the incident affected not just him and Sreesanth, but also the next generation—most poignantly, Sreesanth’s daughter.

Harbhajan Singh reflects on his actions against Sreesanth in IPL 2008

Harbhajan, renowned for his fiery spirit on the field, has often spoken about his regret over the slapgate episode. In a candid conversation with Ravichandran Ashwin on “Kutti Stories with Ashwin,” he described it as the single incident he would erase from his career if given the chance.

What transpired was wrong and I shouldn’t have done what I did. I apologised 200 times. What I felt so bad was even years after that incident, I have been apologising at every opportunity or stage I get. It was a mistake,” Harbhajan conceded, his voice tinged with remorse.

Yet, it was not just professional repercussions or public scrutiny that weighed on him. Years later, a meeting with Sreesanth’s young daughter proved to be a fresh twist of the emotional knife.

As Harbhajan recounted, “What hurt me even after many years was when I met his daughter and I was talking to her with a lot of love and she said, ‘I don’t want to talk to you. You hit my father.’ My heart was shattered and I was on the verge of tears.”

The innocence of a child’s words brought home the realization that the consequences of one rash moment could outlive the immediate aftermath, embedding itself in personal relationships and memories.

Despite its lingering sting, the aftermath of that slap was not destined to breed lifelong rancour. Harbhajan and Sreesanth, both competitive warriors for India, managed to repair their professional relationship. They played together for the national team, contributing to India’s memorable 2011 World Cup victory and more recently, sharing dressing rooms again in veterans’ leagues. Their ability to work through their differences speaks volumes about professional maturity and personal growth.

Still, Harbhajan’s sorrow at the impression left on Sreesanth’s daughter is unmistakable: “I still apologise to his daughter that I can’t do anything.” The episode stands as a potent reminder that athletes, so often idolized, are not immune to the lasting repercussions of their actions—especially when witnessed by the next generation.
