Presumed Innocent season 2 is adapting Jo Murray’s Dissection of a Murder, which features a standalone crime drama story that has nothing to do with Scott Turow’s Presumed Innocent novel (the book season 1 loosely adapted). Owing to the show’s anthology approach, it seems unlikely that any of season 1’s characters will show up in season 2.

Jake Gyllenhaal, too, has been replaced by Rachel Brosnahan as the show’s lead. Since Peter Sarsgaard’s Tommy Molto was also one of the key figures in Presumed Innocent season 1’s narrative, his return, too, seems unlikely in season 2. Even before season 2’s confirmation, Sarsgaard had confirmed (via Indiewire) that he was “not interested in sequels.“

Given how Peter Sarsgaard is best known for capturing morally questionable characters on the big and small screens, he seems to be the perfect casting choice for John Ashpool.
