France 4-1 Wales – Report, result and goals as Welsh sit on brink of Euro 2025 elimination

France produced another dominant performance to beat Wales 4-1 at Euro 2025.

Despite a spirited showing from the visitors, particularly in the first half, Les Bleues’ quality shone through to all but book their place in the knockout stages of the tournament.

The hosts came flying out of the blocks and found the back of the net just eight minutes in.

Clara Mateo was rewarded for her early energy with a well-taken goal, smashing a right-footed shot into the top right corner after a flurry of corners and blocked attempts.

However, Wales responded to the deficit. Just five minutes later, Ceri Holland set up Jess Fishlock, who slotted calmly past Pauline Peyraud-Magnin.

After a brief VAR review, the goal was given, and the game was level at 1-1, sparking hope of a potential miracle in Switzerland.

France regained control before the break. A clumsy foul by Holland in the box allowed Diani to restore the lead from the spot, calmly converting in first-half stoppage time.

The second half saw France turn the screw. In the 53rd minute, Amel Majri extended the lead with a low drive across goal after being picked out by Mateo.

France’s build-up play was proving to be top class, and the Welsh defence began to tire under sustained pressure. Ten minutes later, Geyoro sealed the win. After clever work on the right by Diani, she reacted quickest to fire home from close range, making it 4-1 and putting the result beyond doubt.

Wales had their chances. Substitute Hannah Cain provided a spark late on, and Josie Green came close twice in the 82nd minute – first with a blocked shot, then drawing a sharp save from Peyraud-Magnin.

Despite a flurry of late efforts and a few dangerous corners, the Welsh couldn’t find a way back into the game.

Wales now head into their game against England knowing it will take a complete miracle to advance.
