Chappell Roan, dressed in a two-piece outfit made of hair that resembles her own, let a waterfall of red hair spill over the fire escape to meet her knight with a shining Metrocard down below (via ketakitsmarishvili on TikTok). The tight shot from the fire escape may be only a glimpse into a much larger production away from the public eye.

In the two years following her debut album, Chappell Roan has only officially released two songs: “Good Luck, Babe!,” and “The Giver.” Despite the lack of wide releases, Chappell Roan knows how to keep her fans satiated, sprinkling new songs into her set and releasing demos on the B-sides of her singles.

The wide breadth of Chappell’s unreleased catalog makes this spotting all the more interesting. Those following her every career move can not tell if this music video will accompany a song they have been begging the artist to release, or something they have never heard before.

To many internet users, the answer is obvious: this must be the music video for the long-awaited “The Subway.” Her unreleased song is deeply tied to the Big Apple. The pop star first debuted the song, painted green from head to toe, in Lady Liberty drag at NYC’s Governor’s Ball in 2024.

The song details the pain of crossing paths with a past lover on the subway and the struggle to outrun the memory of a relationship in the city where it blossomed. Although internet users claim they can see her lip-syncing the iconic lyrics to the unreleased fan-favorite, it is difficult to be certain.

When speaking about “The Subway” on the podcast Las Culturistas, Roan seemed to draw a line in the sand. She claimed that she has tried tirelessly to make the song work in the studio, but some songs only work live.

She has yet to release official music videos for “The Giver” and “Good Luck, Babe!,” (besides lyric videos), so it is not outside the realm of possibility that this music video could be tied to one of her recent singles.

The setting is appropriate for “The Subway,” but a new music video is filmed in the city every day, regardless of the song’s themes. The Rapunzel reference seems out of place for the four potential songs this video could be connected to. It is difficult to say what would be more exciting: finally being able to stream “The Subway” or receiving never-heard-before Chappell Roan material.
