One of Foundation’s stars has revealed that season 3 will have a darker tone with higher stakes. Foundation season 3 premieres on Apple TV+ on July 11, 2025, releasing at 12:00 a.m. ET and simultaneously in other time zones. With season 2 exploring conflict between Foundation and Empire, season 3 adds a third-party wild card to the mix: The Mule.
In an interview with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan for Foundation season 3, actress Lou Llobell revealed that the new season’s tone would be “a little bit darker,” with much higher stakes. She also explained that her character, Gaal Dornick, will take on a new leadership role in preparation for facing off against The Mule. Read the full quote below:
ScreenRant: Going into season three, compared to seasons one and two, how does this season feel different for you in terms of character, stakes, [or] tone? What are the biggest differences?
Lou Llobell: Everything. I mean, I think the tone is a little bit darker. The stakes are a lot higher. Gaal is a lot more in control. She is a leader now. She is accepting [that] she’s a leader and she’s making sacrifices and making difficult decisions in order to get to the point of facing The Mule and hopefully beating him. And it is exciting to see her evolve and become a woman and an adult after these two seasons.

The original notion of Foundation, as written by author Isaac Asimov and adapted in the show’s first episode, is the concept that Empire will eventually collapse, and chaos and barbarism will follow for 30,000 years. In season 3, which is based on the second part of Foundation and Empire, that fate is closer than ever.
Much of what Hari Seldon anticipated has come true so far, with two crises occurring in the first two seasons. The third Seldon crisis will transpire in season 3, with even more drastic threats. As Llobell says, her character is forced to make complicated decisions and sacrifices, and she won’t be the only one.

Foundation Season 3 Looks Like Another Drastic Step Up
After being very excited for Foundation season 1, I’ll admit that the opening episodes didn’t do much for me. I loved the tone and appreciated the impressive sci-fi visuals, but the Empire plotline was the only part that I found particularly entertaining. Season 2 made notable improvements, and season 3 appears to be taking it a step further.

Apple TV+’s Foundation has made some big changes to the source material already, and I don’t mind if that carries on as long as it stays so good.
Foundation will benefit from its darker tone, allowing it to become what it was always meant to be: a Dune-like space opera inspired by Isaac Asimov’s prolific stories. This show is far from a direct adaptation, but the dramatized version of Asimov’s Foundation is quite thrilling in its own way.
