Pedro double puts Blues into Club World Cup final

Chelsea are into the Club World Cup final after Joao Pedro scored a goal in each half to see off his former club Fluminense in New Jersey.

The recent signing from Brighton opened the scoring with a fabulous curler from the edge of the area.

The Brazilian side thought they had a way back into the game when they were given a penalty for handball by Trevoh Chalobah – but after a VAR review the decision was overturned.

Chelsea then dominated the second half and Pedro got his second with a thumping shot in off the crossbar after a fine counter-attack.

Substitute Nicolas Jackson wasted a couple of late chances and Moises Caicedo went down with a twisted ankle in stoppage time to put a slight dampener on proceedings.

But the midfielder was able to limp away after some treatment and didn’t appear badly hurt.

The temperature was around 34C at kick-off at MetLife Stadium and Chelsea were playing their 63rd game of a season that began last August.

Fluminense came close to a leveller after Pedro’s fine goal when Hercules broke through and rounded Robert Sanchez but Marc Cucurella cleared off the line.

Chelsea had another scare when French referee Francois Letexier pointed to the penalty spot after a Fluminense cross flicked the head of Thiago Santos and then struck the arm of Chalobah.

It seemed a harsh decision and was reversed following a VAR review.

But once Pedro hit his brilliant second Chelsea keeper Sanchez was not troubled.
