It’s hard to believe that Counter-Strike 2, essentially an update to 2012’s Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (similar to how Overwatch 2 replaced the original Overwatch in 2023) remains the most played game on Steam in 2025, especially with a lot of free-to-play shooter competition. Counter-Strike 2‘s initial launch drew praise from most critics for its smooth gunplay and high skill ceiling, while the fan reception was quite negative, with major criticisms aimed at the removal of fan-favorite game modes, the lack of Mac support, and several other issues, with the game getting review-bombed on Steam at release.

Since then, fans have warmed up to the updated game, and it’s currently sitting at a “very positive” reception on Steam with almost nine million reviews total. Counter-Strike 2‘s updated features allowed players to interact more with the game’s environments and carry over their entire inventory from the original game, and it came with a general graphical and performance overhaul. Even 13 years after CS:GO‘s original release, Counter-Strike 2 is deeply resonating with the online competitive shooter scene.

According to SteamDB, as of this writing, Counter-Strike 2 has more than 1.5 million concurrent players, with its all-time peak being over 1.8 million. In the twelve-year history of the storage page, Counter-Strike 2 is more popular than ever. It’s always been one of the most competitive and popular eSports games, but pro players typically only make up for a fraction of the total player count for any title. The game’s ludicrously high concurrent player account number was achieved in April this year.

Despite the initial controversy of removing game modes and potentially feeling like a lesser experience when compared to the original game, Counter-Strike 2 has regained the faith of its player base and has grown. Even more impressively (arguably), is that it doesn’t offer much content or value for shooter fans that don’t enjoy intense competition, so its current player count seems to be a testament to the solid foundations and legacy it established with the previous game.

It’s hard to pinpoint one specific reason for Counter-Strike 2‘s huge success; it seems to be a blitz of several important smaller aspects that add up to create a memorable multiplayer experience. The game is free-to-play, much like some of its competitors, especially the recent and popular Marvel Rivals (despite Rivals being a hero-shooter and its player count slowly dropping). Other competitive shooters like Halo Infinite also seem to have a lower skill ceiling, which can encourage players to jump back into another game of Counter-Strike to get better.
