Superman & Lois had Superman reveal his identity to the world in the fourth and final season, which could actually help improve the DCU‘s version of the story. Superman is one of the most popular heroes in all of popular culture. As such, his story has been adapted many, many times over the years.
However, Superman also has a wealth of stories that have been told across his comic book history, which stretches all the way back to 1938. Despite this, the movies and shows that tell Superman’s story appear to consistently repeat a few key details about the character. And yet, there are minor variations that shows like Superman & Lois pioneer, and the DCU is likely to continue carving out their own unique Superman story.
Superman’s Secret Identity Generally Stays That Way In Most DC Movies & Shows
Clark Kent Has A Big Secret That He Hides From The World
Like most superheros, Superman is protective of his secret identity. Heroes generally remain anonymous in order to protect their loved ones, or try to keep their private and hero lives separate. However, for Clark Kent, he has the added incentive that he is an alien, and he wants to blend in.

James Gunn’s Superman is skipping his origin story, and I’m excited to see one aspect of Clark Kent’s life after one actor’s recent comments.
Clark hails from a planet called Krypton, and his unique physiology allows him to absorb energy from the yellow sun that gives him incredible powers. However, humans don’t always look kindly on things they don’t understand, and Clark and his loved ones believe keeping his true heritage secret is for the best.
As a result, the Superman story that is adapted in most movies and shows includes this duality, with Clark Kent and Superman living separately. It’s a big focal point for the stories, and one that provides a lot of tension and excitement. But that doesn’t mean every Superman adaptation plays by these rules.
Superman & Lois Having Clark Kent Go Public About His Secret Identity Just Before DCU’s Superman Movie Helps Build The Suspense Around Its Own Version Of The Story
Superman & Lois Delivered This Story At The Perfect Time
In Superman & Lois, Clark is a father to two teenage boys, and he has operated as Earth’s greatest hero under wraps for decades. But even in this setting, where he earned the trust of humanity as a whole, Clark chooses to keep his identity a secret to protect his family.
However, in the fourth and final season of the series, Lex Luthor makes it his mission to expose Clark for who he is. While Superman usually finds a way around Luthor’s plans, there is no avoiding unraveling his secrets in Superman & Lois season 4. And due to Superman’s extended relationship with humanity, he manages to find acceptance, despite his fears.
This all kicks off with one important storyline that has its roots in comic books, an interview with Lois Lane. Now, for the comics and earlier films, this interview is usually Superman’s introduction to the world. But in Superman & Lois, it’s Clark Kent’s reveal as Superman, introducing himself to the world, and uncovering his greatest secret.
The DCU Doesn’t Need To Reveal Superman’s Secret Identity To Keep This Storyline Tense
David Corenswet’s Superman Has His Own Issues To Deal With
Interestingly, the DCU’s Superman will also feature an interview between Lois Lane and Superman, but there is nothing to suggest this is revealing his secret identity. Instead, this film is setting the foundation for the DCU, and the interview appears to be a first for Clark trying to put Superman’s voice across to the people of the world.

The DC Universe’s Superman Needs To Learn These 10 Lessons From Superman: The Animated Series
Superman: The Animated Series perfectly demonstrated the way in which James Gunn’s DCU should adapt the iconic Man of Steel as its flagship movie.
But Superman doesn’t need to use the big reveal as a way to build tension, because this movie, and the fledgling DCU is already packed with plenty of stories to expand and unpack. Superman & Lois was wrapping up a story that had already played out over four full seasons of TV. Evidently, the goals for both are a little different.
Superman doesn’t need to use the big reveal as a way to build tension.
However, having the interview included as an important point in Superman’s timeline is interesting. Up to this point, Superman has been operating as a hero. But, it seems he has rarely paused to examine how his actions could be interpreted on a larger scale. With the help of his girlfriend, Lois Lane, he has the chance to learn this lesson in a rather challenging way in Superman.
