Middlesbrough appoint Rob Edwards as head coach

Middlesbrough have appointed Rob Edwards as their new head coach.

Edwards has agreed to a three-year deal with the Championship club, taking over from Michael Carrick.

The 42-year-old has previously managed the likes of Forest Green, Watford and Luton Town, whom he guided to the Premier League.

Edwards spent time in the Championship with Watford and Luton, along with one match as Wolves’ interim head coach.

He has won 24 of his 62 matches in the division (38.7% win rate), averaging 1.5 points per game. His sides have both scored and conceded 73 goals in that time.

Edwards told the Middlesbrough website: “It’s a real privilege to be given the opportunity to be head coach of this great football club.

“It’s something that’s not lost on me, how big this is, how important this is, and what it means to people. There is an amazing fanbase.

“It felt instantly that this was right for me, and it got me excited. If I was going to come back in, I wanted to come back in at a place where we had a chance, and we have a really good chance here.

“We have a brilliant owner who historically gives his coaches time, support, and the tools needed to try and be successful. I can’t wait to get started now.”

Edwards left Luton in January after four straight losses, with this his first role since.

Middlesbrough finished last season in 10th, four points off Bristol City, who clinched the final play-off spot.
