“I Feel Like A Total Fraud” Daredevil Actor Charlie Cox Discusses His Clair Obscur Role

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has quickly become the most talked-about and highly rated game of 2025, and its all-star cast of voice actors includes the likes of the legendary Andy Serkis, Jennifer English (Baldur’s Gate 3), and of course, Daredevil star Charlie Cox. Believe it or not, Charlie Cox hasn’t actually played Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 because he’s not really a big gamer, but I think fans will happily forgive him for this.

In a recent interview during a press junket at the Washington State Summer Con (via BlueSky), Charlie Cox was brutally honest about his role in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, stating that he’s “not a gamer, [hasn’t] played it,” and that he “feel[s] like a total fraud.” Apparently fans of the game are quick to congratulate Charlie Cox on his success and his incredible voice acting.

Charlie Cox on his role in ‘Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’ “Apparently the game is awesome. I’m not a gamer … I haven’t played it. My agent asked me if I wanted to go and do a voiceover … I was in the studio for 4 hours … People keep saying ‘congratulations’ and I feel like a total fraud” 😂

However, the actor admits that he received a call from his agent about a voiceover gig and was only in the studio for about 4 hours. That’s a pretty awesome return on investment, and it’s likely fans don’t care one way or the other if he’s actually played the game.

Charlie Cox Says He Isn’t A Gamer But Hears Clair Obscur Is “Awesome”

The Daredevil Star Doesn’t Play Video Games, But Knocked It Out Of The Park Regardless

At the Washington State Summer Con, Charlie Cox, star of the hit Daredevil series, was asked about his role in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, revealing that he doesn’t play video games at all but that he hears the game is “awesome.” He also said people keep congratulating him and that “I feel like a total fraud.” He spent a total of four hours in the studio recording the beloved character Gustave’s lines, and likely didn’t realize just how big of an impact those four hours would have on such a huge audience of gamers.

Charlie Cox was completely honest about his role and didn’t try to pretend he was a die-hard video game oficiando, admitting to the fact that he doesn’t play games and hasn’t touched Clair Obscur yet, and went on to congratulate the developers of Clair Obscur (Sandfall Interactive and Kepler Interactive) for its success. Fans on BlueSky are appreciative of his honesty, with user Everyone Is Stupid Except Me stating that “Charlie rules” for being honest and not trying to pretend like he’s been a fan of video games his whole life.

Our Take: It’s Okay For Non-Gamers To Act In Video Games

Voice Actors Don’t Need To Be Video Game Enthusiasts To Do A Great Job

Just because a voice actor hasn’t played video games doesn’t mean they can’t do an incredible job, and Charlie Cox’s role as Gustave is a shining example of this. Personally, I don’t care if he’s ever picked up a video game in his life if it means I can experience an authentically performed character brought to life in such a profound and impactful way. Gustave is easily a fan-favorite character in Clair Obscur, and this is largely due to Cox’s incredible voice performance and delivery.

Whether or not Charlie Cox has played a video game is completely irrelevant to the task at hand. As long as they can deliver their lines and give audiences a standout performance, there’s no need for voice actors to play the games they perform in at all. However, if Cox ever gets some spare time, I think he’d be pleasantly surprised (and also heartbroken) at how his voice comes to life through Gustave in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. If he ever decides to take an interest in video games, he knows exactly where to get started.
