Real cruise past City while PSV shock Juventus

Kylian Mbappe bagged a first Champions League hat-trick in Real Madrid colours as the Spanish giants swept aside Manchester City 3-1 on the night at the Bernabeu and 6-3 on aggregate to reach the last 16.

Nico Gonzalez scored a consolation goal for City in second-half stoppage time as Real reasserted their credentials as genuine Champions League contenders after a stuttering in the initial league phase.

Mbappe, alongside Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior in a frighteningly good front three, was in scintillating form as City never really got a look in, leading manager Pep Guardiola to admit this was the first season his side had not had a good European campaign.

Elsewhere, PSV produced the shock of the evening by dumping out Juventus 4-3 on aggregate following a 3-1 victory.

Ivan Perisic had given the Dutch side the lead before Timothy Weah levelled things up on the hour mark.

The Italian side were still 3-2 to the good on aggregate going into the final 20 minutes but an Ismael Saibari strike took the game to extra time where Ryan Flamingo found the net to complete the comeback.

In the other two games on the night, PSG had seven different scorers as they breezed past Brest 7-0 to progress 10-0 on aggregate, while Borussia Dortmund played out a goalless draw at home to Sporting to preserve their 3-0 scoreline from the first leg.

The draw for the last 16 of this season’s competition takes place on Friday, 11am UK time.
