The first official trailer for the upcoming Dexter sequel series, Dexter: Resurrection, has been released by Paramount+ with Showtime at CCXP Mexico 2025. Created by Dexter: New Blood and Dexter: Original Sin showrunner Clyde Phillips, Dexter: Resurrection will take place after the events of Dexter: New Blood, which ended with Dexter seemingly being shot and killed by his adult son, Harrison. A brief opening scene in Dexter: Original Sin, which received mostly positive reviews, revealed that Dexter survived the gunshot ahead of the Dexter: Resurrection series premiere on July 11, 2025.

The new trailer for Dexter: Resurrection shows Michael C. Hall’s iconic Dexter Morgan hitting the streets of New York City. After waking up in a hospital and encountering his old Miami Metro colleague Angel Batista, played by David Zayas, asking about Dexter being the Bay Harbor Butcher, Dexter makes a break for it. He meets Uma Thurman’s new character, Charley, who introduces him to Peter Dinklage’s Leon Prater, a man with a particular taste for serial killers. Dexter is joined by a group of other presumed killers played by Eric Stonestreet, Krysten Ritter, David Dastmalchian, and Neil Patrick Harris. James Remar also returns as Dexter’s father from the dead, Harry.

Dexter Adopts A New York State Of Mind & A Batch Of Lethal Friends

For the first time in franchise history, Dexter looks to be working in tandem with an elite group of other stealthy killers, organized by Dinklage’s Leon Prater. Sort of like The Continental hotel in the John Wick franchise, Prater offers a safe haven to New York City’s most lethal and elite killers, which certainly introduces a new tone for the Dexter universe. Typically, Dexter works alone with the help of his spiritual guide/dark passenger manifestation, Harry, who was replaced by Dexter’s sister, Deb, in New Blood. The new Dexter: Resurrection trailer also includes Angel speaking with Harrison (Jack Alcott), warning him that he’s going down a dark path.

Dexter: Resurrection appears to take place entirely in New York City, making another first for the beloved franchise. The multiple additions to the Dexter universe, such as Dinklage’s and Thurman’s key characters, are promising signs for the longevity of Resurrection as Dexter embarks on a new chapter.

Jimmy Smits and John Lithgow, who played the classic Dexter villains Miguel Prado and Arthur Mitchell in the original series, are expected to appear in Dexter: Resurrection but are notably not included in the first official trailer. New York Post headlines that read “Dark Passenger Strikes Again” and “Dark Passenger – 7, NYPD – 0“ suggest that Dexter goes on a killing spree while in NYC.

Dexter Letting Loose In Manhattan Sounds Like A Killer Combo

The first official Dexter: Resurrection trailer suggests that there will be some major and expansive changes to the traditional Dexter formula, which should offer a much-needed revamping of the series. Manhattan is tonally opposite to the remote fictional town of Iron Lake, New York, where New Blood took place, and should offer plenty of exciting new developments given the energetic setting.

Harrison remains a part of the story, appearing as a hotel bellhop in one scene and dragging a dead body in another, but he is not depicted with Dexter in the trailer. Overall, the Dexter: Resurrection trailer is undoubtedly intriguing and introduces a fantastic supporting cast that will hopefully make the new spinoff a streaming hit.
