Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has said Harry Kane will be assessed hours before his side’s Champions League play-off decider against Celtic after missing training on Monday.

Kompany played down the possibility of Kane being injured after the forward featured throughout the 0-0 draw at Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday that kept the Bundesliga leaders eight points clear of their second-placed opponents.

“It’s nothing bad,” said Kompany. “We haven’t had a lot of time to recover. Sometimes you need an extra rest day. We’ll see how he feels tomorrow.”

Bayern vs Celtic: ‘Strength and energy’

Bayern are huge favourites to progress to the round of 16 after winning the first leg of their play-off tie at Celtic Park last Wednesday through Michael Olise’s 45th-minute opener and a Kane goal four minutes after half-time in their 2-1 win.

When he was asked whether he could rest key players during the coming weeks, Kompany replied that he “can’t say much about that now”.

“We trust our squad,” added the Belgian. “I don’t want to judge what will happen in the future yet. I don’t want to look any further than our game against Celtic.

“We have a lot of games… but that’s also fun. And we have a squad who are up for it. When the results are right, you have that little bit of extra strength and energy – and that should help us [against Celtic].”

Bayern team news: Palhinha poorly

Midfielder Joao Palhinha is a doubt as Bayern bid to avoid a first defeat in 21 Champions League home matches, last losing such a game against Paris St-Germain in April 2021.

“Joao was sick,” said Kompany, whose side face the Scottish Premiership leaders on Tuesday (8pm GMT). “We’ll see how he is [on the day of the game]. Hopefully he can be there. We now have almost the full squad back.

“We’ll be prepared, whether they sit deep or press us. When you play against teams that are used to being dominant in their league and scoring a lot of goals, you see a team that is always dangerous when they go forward.

“Celtic showed that, too – but we did well. They’ve done very well in the Champions League so far. They can always be dangerous.

“The good thing is that we won at Celtic Park and then got an important point in Leverkusen. It’s a good opportunity to do something good again in these six days, which have been very busy.”

The winners of the tie will meet Leverkusen or Atletico Madrid next, depending on the outcome of the draw on February 21 to finalise the round of 16 fixtures.
