Borussia Dortmund produced a thrilling display in front of their home fans but ultimately fell short in their bid to overturn a four-goal deficit, defeating Barcelona 3-1 on the night but losing 5-3 on aggregate in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Dortmund came into the second leg trailing 4-0, but they wasted no time in showing their intent.

The German side dominated the opening exchanges, generating a flurry of early chances.

Maximilian Beier, Karim Adeyemi, and Daniel Svensson all tested Wojciech Szczesny, who was called into action multiple times in a frenetic first 10 minutes.

The breakthrough came in the 11th minute. A VAR review overturned an offside decision to award Dortmund a penalty after Szczesny brought down Pascal Gross.

Serhou Guirassy stepped up and coolly converted, dinking the ball down the middle to give the hosts a deserved lead and ignite the crowd even further.

Shortly after the restart, Dortmund struck again. A well-worked corner routine saw Bensebaini nod the ball across goal for Guirassy, who headed home from close range to double the lead and reduce the aggregate score to 4-2.

Just as Dortmund appeared to be gaining the upper hand, disaster struck. On 54 minutes, Barca’s Fermin Lopez drilled a low cross into the box which deflected off Bensebaini and into his own net, restoring a three-goal cushion for the visitors at 5-2 on aggregate.

Despite the setback, Dortmund never stopped believing. Substitute Julien Duranville made an immediate impact, bursting past defenders and delivering a dangerous cross.

Ronald Araujo’s attempted clearance fell straight to Guirassy, who smashed home to complete his hat-trick and bring it to 3-1 on the night, 5-3 on aggregate.

It was a record-breaking moment for Guirassy, who became only the fourth Dortmund player to net a Champions League hat-trick after Lewandowski, Aubameyang, and Adeyemi.

With momentum on their side and just under 15 minutes to go, Dortmund pushed hard for a dramatic comeback. Brandt had the ball in the net moments after coming on, but his goal was ruled out for offside.
