In a high-stakes Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 clash between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 12 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer found himself at the centre of a dramatic DRS controversy that sparked confusion.

The moment unfolded during the fourth over of SRH’s explosive run chase, when PBKS all-rounder Glenn Maxwell appealed for a caught-behind dismissal against Travis Head. Wicketkeeper Prabhsimran Singh supported the appeal, convinced that the Aussie had edged it, but the on-field umpire turned it down – even signalling it as a wide.

What followed was pure drama. Without pausing for team consensus or captaincy protocol, Maxwell gestured for a DRS review. This seemingly impulsive decision visibly enraged Iyer, who hadn’t even been consulted. Caught off guard, the PBKS captain was seen animatedly pointing at himself and shouting towards his teammates, reportedly saying “Pehle mujhse puch na” (Ask me first). Though Iyer reluctantly gave the go-ahead moments later, the spontaneous decision-making undermined his leadership on the field and sparked questions about team coordination in pressure situations.

According to standard IPL DRS regulations, the final authority to take a review lies solely with the captain. Fielders may suggest or request, but it is ultimately the skipper’s call to initiate the review by making the ‘T’ sign. In this case, Glenn Maxwell bypassed that protocol, and the third umpire accepted the review without visible approval from Iyer  – a rare procedural lapse.

The review eventually proved fruitless. Replays confirmed that Travis Head had not edged the ball, and the decision remained unchanged. Adding salt to the wound, PBKS also lost one of their valuable DRS reviews early in the innings.  While the DRS altercation took center stage momentarily, it was the heroics of Abhishek Sharma that ultimately stole the show. Chasing a mammoth target of 246 set by Punjab – thanks to Iyer’s 82 and Prabhsimran’s 42 off 23 – SRH turned the game on its head.

Abhishek played an innings for the ages, smashing a blistering 141 off just 55 deliveries in one of the greatest knocks in IPL history. Supported by Head at the top, SRH completed the historic chase in sensational fashion, handing Punjab a crushing defeat and rendering Iyer’s frustration all the more bitter.
