Russell is officially back in Tracker.
Jensen Ackles’ fan-favorite character has been a major player in the CBS procedural the moment he debuted in its first season. Despite not being a series regular, Colter Shaw’s older brother has appeared enough times in Tracker that viewers have developed an investment in his arc, especially when it ties to the bigger narrative that the series is telling. As promised, Ackles is coming back to reprise his role in CBS’s fall 2026 lineup, although it’s unclear if his lingering narrative will be addressed.
For context, Tracker season 3 ended with the resolution of Ashton Shaw’s mysterious murder, but a new case was born when McIntyre essentially blackmailed Russell into a job. Apparently, there’s secret information about Colter’s history with their dad that could be detrimental to him, forcing his older brother to agree with the new set-up. Unfortunately, while his intentions are good, Russell should have known that keeping things from Colter risks their own relationship. Now, he’s back, potentially setting up an important conversation between them.
CBS has officially unveiled the first look at Ackles’ return in Tracker. As promised, Russell is reuniting with Colter in season 4, episode 5, “Need To Know. ” Per the official synopsis, the outing will see the Shaws teaming up for a new case, although it doesn’t seem like the reunion is planned, adding drama to an already tense narrative. Read it below:
After a military contractor’s wife and daughter are kidnapped, Colter discovers Russell is investigating a related lead. The Shaw brothers join forces to uncover a high-stakes cover-up.
Based on the images and episode synopsis, it doesn’t seem like the outing will properly address the lingering secret between the brothers. Instead, much of Russell and Colter’s reunion will be focused on case of the week, which is part of Tracker’s commitment to its procedural format. While the majority of Ackles’ appearances have been structured this way, it’s worth noting that his guest stints still moved the needle towards the bigger storyline at play. With that, it’s possible that “Need To Know” would still include new information about how he has been.
Whether Ackles returns beyond his confirmed Tracker season 4 cameo is still uncertain at this point. The series has brought him back at least once every cycle, with the exception of the 2025-2026 year, as his prominence was significantly increased with multi-episode involvement. Assuming that Tracker intends to stretch out this secret between him and Colter, it might actually be better to limit his appearances in season 4, otherwise, CBS risks the possibility of the narrative getting repetitive.
Seeing Ackles in Tracker is always a good thing. His chemistry with Hartley is the best, and in an ideal world, the show would lean more into it. How “Need To Know” ends hopefully offers major new information about the Shaw family’s new overall mystery that paves the way for Russell’s eventual return.
