Project Hail Mary really has been an absolute revelation, both as a book, and as a big budget sci-fi movie fronted by the always ridiculously charming Ryan Gosling. The story of Ryland Grace’s unwilling journey into the stars is bizarrely relatable, given the subject matter, and Rocky easily secures the crown as the cutest boulder in any media property to date.

As such, the movie has also been an enormous success commercially, and it has every chance of doing very well during awards season as well, with most expecting a few Academy nods when those are announced. With all of that going on, it would have been easy to miss that there is a third way to enjoy the burgeoning franchise, and it’s much more interactive than either of the other two options.

Over on the official Meta website, you should be able to find the game listing for Project Hail Mary: Journey Among The Stars. Players step into the shoes of Grace during a crucial, previously unseen, part of the mission, meaning you and Rocky have to work together to push forward and survive.

Currently available to pre-order, the narrative is an entirely new, original story from Andy Weir (the author of the original work), and if that doesn’t give it plenty of credence, then I don’t know what does. In letting fans know a little about what they can expect from the game, the developer shared the following description:

“Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars is a mixed-reality adventure set in the cinematic world based on Andy Weir’s best-selling sci-fi novel, where players join Ryland Grace and Rocky during a pivotal untold chapter of the mission. Work together in the face of disaster to keep the Hail Mary intact and bring their world-saving cargo to Eridani — Rocky’s home planet, and Grace’s new home.

• Work alongside Rocky to keep the mission alive, and experience humanity’s last hope firsthand
• Manage your ship and its precious cargo as you travel through the stars
• Diagnose failing systems, and improvise scientific solutions

“The Hail Mary is enroute from Tau Ceti to 40 Eridani A. Ryland Grace and his friend and crewmate Rocky must work together in the face of disaster to keep the ship intact and bring their world-saving cargo to Eridani — Grace’s new home.”

Developed by Maze Theory, the game is set to release before the end of the year, and if you do order it ahead of time, you can also get the Limited Edition Gold Xenonite Collection. That amounts to three mixed reality statues of Rocky, Grace and the Hail Mary ship, which you can then display as you wish.

Other than that, it will just be a case of sitting tight and waiting to see just how much awards acclaim Project Hail Mary receives in the first half of next year. Don’t be surprised if we start hearing murmurs of a sequel or spin-off at some point either, given just how massive this first effort has become.
