Pokémon ROM hacks have been a breath of fresh air for the beloved franchise, as players transform older games into the experiences of their dreams.Whatever generation you happen to be a fan of, there’s a ROM hack out there for pretty much anyone, combining beloved features with huge casts of everyone’s favorite creatures.
One of the most exciting and ambitious projects under that banner is Pokémon Hyper Emerald, and it just got a major new update that’s well worth looking at.
Pokémon Hyper Emerald Just Got A New Update
As noted over on YouTube, Pokémon Hyper Emerald received a 5.7 update at the start of the year, and it really is in the best shape it has ever been in. It is now so comprehensive and ambitious, that many are now calling it the best example of a Pokémon ROM hack to be found anywhere on the internet.
If you haven’t been familiar with it up to this point, Pokémon Hyper Emerald makes massive changes to the similarly named Gen III game, drawing in ‘mons from Generation I-VII (not all of them), as well as Legendary and Mythical creatures that don’t usually feature in the base release.
It adds a ton of popular modern mechanics that usually hit the series much later, including splitting Physical and Special moves, adding Mega Evolutions, updating moves and abilities with versions from later games, reusable TMs and a ton of other quality-of-life features.
At the same time, gameplay has been enhanced significantly, with a full day/night cycle added to proceedings, as well as Dynamax features and considerably improved animations and battle systems.
Outside of that, there’s still plenty more to get into, and the latest 5.7 update, known as Lost Artifacts, dials up the ambition even further. It adds new narrative and story content for players to explore, as well as UI/UX updates, alongside changes to battles and gameplay more generally.
This Fan Game Lets You Explore Multiple Regions
Arguably the coolest thing about Pokémon Hyper Emerald is the fact that it lets you explore several regions in its expansive story, with Hoenn and Sinnoh dominating. Outside of the first two regions, those two most often crop up amongst fan favorite discussions, so it’s nice to see them used here.
It’s also worth noting we haven’t seen an official Pokémon game let us explore multiple regions since Gold & SIlver surprised us with a generous post-game set in the entirety of Kanto. Of course, after 30 years, we now know this was a very rare exception to the rule, and that we shouldn’t expect to be able to explore past regions in new Pokémon games anymore. I get why it can’t always be something we do, but maybe just once more as a surprise . . . wouldn’t that be something special?
As with all Pokémon ROM hacks, the whole thing is totally free to download, and there’s so much to jump into that it should keep you occupied for tens, if not hundreds, of hours.
