Top 5 highest successful run chases in T20I cricket ft. West Indies

Successful run chases have produced some of the most memorable moments in T20I cricket, with teams overcoming enormous targets through explosive batting and remarkable partnerships. The format has seen several totals above 240 chased down, underlining how quickly a match can turn when batters find their rhythm.

West Indies have featured prominently in this list, both as the team setting a massive target and as the side chasing one down. Their recent performance against India added another remarkable chapter to T20I history, although South Africa continue to hold the record for the highest successful chase.

1. South Africa chase 259 vs West Indies

South Africa produced a historic batting performance against West Indies at SuperSport Park in Centurion in March 2023. After West Indies posted 258/5, powered by Johnson Charles’ sensational 118 off 46 balls, the hosts responded with an extraordinary chase.

Quinton de Kock led the charge with 100 off 44 deliveries, while Reeza Hendricks smashed 68 off 28 balls. Their opening partnership of 152 runs came in just 10.5 overs, putting South Africa firmly in control. Aiden Markram then helped finish the job as the Proteas reached 259/4 in 18.5 overs to secure the highest successful run chase in men’s T20I cricket.

2. West Indies chase 253 vs India

West Indies produced a stunning chase against India in Ranchi on October 9, 2026, reaching 253/4 after being set a target of 250. India’s total of 249/5 was built around Sanju Samson’s explosive 82, but the Caribbean side responded with an equally destructive batting display.

Captain Shai Hope scored an unbeaten 102 off 45 balls, while Sherfane Rutherford hammered 84 off 37 deliveries. The pair added 120 runs for the fourth wicket, turning a difficult chase into a memorable victory. West Indies reached their target in 18.3 overs, recording their highest successful T20I chase and moving to second on the all-time list.

3. Bulgaria chase 246 vs Serbia

Bulgaria created history against Serbia in Sofia in June 2022 by chasing down a target of 243. Serbia had posted 242/4, with Leslie Dunbar producing a spectacular 117 off 50 balls to put his side in a commanding position.

Bulgaria responded with an aggressive batting display led by Saim Hussain and Kevin D’Souza. Hussain smashed 71 off just 24 deliveries, while D’Souza contributed a rapid 66. Their efforts helped Bulgaria reach 246/4 in 19.4 overs, completing a six-wicket victory and setting what was then a record for the highest successful T20I chase.

4. Australia chase 245 vs New Zealand

Australia pulled off a remarkable chase against New Zealand during the Trans-Tasman T20I tri-series at Eden Park in Auckland in February 2018. New Zealand had scored 243/6, thanks largely to Martin Guptill’s 105 off 54 balls, setting Australia a challenging target.

David Warner provided a blistering start with 59 off 24 deliveries, while D’Arcy Short anchored the chase with 76 off 44 balls. Aaron Finch added an unbeaten 36 as Australia reached 245/5 in 18.5 overs, winning by five wickets with seven balls to spare. The result established a new benchmark for successful T20I run chases at the time.

5. Bulgaria chase 244 vs Gibraltar

Bulgaria feature for a second time on this list after chasing down 244 against Gibraltar in Sofia in 2025. The contest was another example of the high-scoring matches that have become a feature of T20I cricket, with Bulgaria successfully hunting down a target of 243.

Their batting lineup maintained the scoring rate under pressure and crossed the finish line at 244/4. The achievement added to Bulgaria’s reputation for producing remarkable chases in international T20 cricket and placed them among the few teams to have successfully chased targets above 240.
