Brand New Day Secretly Sets Up One Of Spider-Man’s Darkest Ever Stories

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Following the massive success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, there are plenty of exciting possibilities for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker and his future in the MCU. However, one of the best options may also be its darkest, and it has me worried about one of the very best new MCU characters that was introduced in Brand New Day.

As seen in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Peter Parker was almost exclusively Spider-Man in the years when Ned and MJ were at MIT, devoting himself 100% to protecting New York as one of its greatest heroes, never resting and hardly giving any time to his life as Peter. As seen in the movie’s opening montage of Spider-Man taking down various villains across New York, it’s confirmed that Spider-Man formed a partnership with NYPD Detective Jean DeWolff (played by The Bear’s Liza Colón-Zayas).

As great as it is to see Spider-Man having an ally with law enforcement in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, looking ahead to the best possible stories for the inevitable Spider-Man 5 has me pretty worried about Detective DeWolff and her future in the MCU, so let’s break down why.

I’m Worried About Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s Jean DeWolff

Jean DeWolff’s introduction in Spider-Man: Brand New Day is super solid, a unique partner for the Webslinger as someone who not only understands that he’s trying to do the right thing for New York, but who also seems to genuinely care about Spider-Man, despite not knowing who he is under the mask.

Before getting his own solo film, Tom Holland’s Peter Parker made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut by being recruited by Tony Stark to help in a massive superhero conflict. In which MCU film did Holland first appear as Spider-Man?

02

In Spider-Man: Homecoming, Peter faces a blue-collar salvage contractor who turned to arms dealing after being shut out of the Chitauri cleanup by Damage Control. Using an alien-tech wingsuit, he becomes one of Spider-Man’s most grounded villains. Who is he?

03

Tony Stark built Peter a high-tech suit loaded with features Peter didn’t even know about, including an AI assistant that helps him in combat, provides tactical analysis, and even gives dating advice. What name does Peter give this AI?

04

In Spider-Man: Far From Home, Peter encounters a seemingly heroic figure who claims to be from an alternate Earth, battling elemental creatures across Europe. In reality, he’s a disgruntled former Stark Industries employee using advanced holographic drones. What is his real name?

05

In one of the MCU’s most shocking mid-credits scenes, J. Jonah Jameson broadcasts doctored footage from Mysterio’s final moments that completely upends Peter Parker’s life. What does this broadcast reveal to the entire world?

06

With his identity exposed and his loved ones under threat, Peter seeks help from a powerful sorcerer to cast a spell that would make the world forget he is Spider-Man. Peter’s constant modifications to the spell cause it to fracture the multiverse. Which sorcerer casts this spell?

07

Throughout all three films, Peter’s loyal best friend serves as his “guy in the chair,” helping with tech support and keeping his secret. In No Way Home, this character even discovers he can open magical portals using a Sling Ring. Who is Peter’s best friend?

08

At the emotional climax of No Way Home, Peter makes an enormous personal sacrifice to save the multiverse. Doctor Strange completes the spell, and when it takes effect, Peter is left completely alone. What does the final spell do?

Are you an Avenger — or just a friendly neighborhood bystander?

This mirrors their relationship in the original comics quite well, with Detective DeWolff having been one of Spider-Man’s most important contacts and allies on the police force, offering key information and assistance, while other NYPD officers weren’t so warm to the Webslinger, especially early on in his vigilante career. It’s also established in Spider-Man: Brand New Day that DeWolff also has two teenagers, making her feel even more like a fully realized person in the MCU.

Taking all of that into account, it explains why I’m so concerned about Jean DeWolff’s future in Spider-Man 5 and beyond, as I could easily see Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures giving her a similarly tragic fate to the one she received on the page.

Spider-Man 5 Adapting The Death of Jean DeWolff Storyline Makes A Lot of Sense

Originally published in 1985, The Death of Jean DeWolff is easily one of Spider-Man’s greatest comic-book storylines. Written by Peter David with art by Rich Buckler, the arc sees Detective DeWolff murdered by the Sin-Eater, a former police officer turned serial killer who targets people he believes deserve punishment. Naturally, DeWolff’s murder hits Spider-Man incredibly hard, sending him spiraling into a very dark place.

The storyline also features the involvement of Daredevil, who helps prevent Spider-Man from fully giving into a desire for lethal vengeance. Likewise, the storyline marks the first time when Peter Parker and Matt Murdock revealed to each other their secret identities and become genuine allies, something MCU fans have been dying to see after Murdock served as Peter’s lawyer in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Not only that, but The Death of Jean DeWolff notably takes place just after the events of 1984’s Secret Wars, which saw Spider-Man returning to Earth with an alien symbiote and getting it off with help from The Fantastic Four, but before the birth of Eddie Brock as Venom. In fact, it was this storyline that saw Eddie Brock getting fired for a falsified article about the Sin Eater, which led to his being in the church the night Peter fully rid himself of the Venom symbiote after it tried rebonding with him.

If Spider-Man does indeed return from 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars with an all-black symbiote suit, it’s not hard to imagine Spider-Man 5 being the perfect movie to adapt this key period in the comics, featuring the conflict with the symbiote and Jean DeWolff’s death in the comics while also laying the foundations for Venom in the MCU. It would be devastating to lose the MCU’s Detective DeWolff, though there is no doubt that adapting her demise and everything that happens before during and after would make for an incredibly exciting sequel to Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is playing in theaters and available on digital from Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures.
