Disney’s 4-Part Supernatural Franchise Scares Up Streaming Domination At The Perfect Time

It’s officially spooky season, and people are already getting into the Halloween spirit. This month is seeing some notable horror movie releases, such as Other Mommy this weekend and DC’s Clayface later in the month. But as much as there is a time and place for these newer titles, October is a time when viewers at home often revisit classic series, such as the Halloween and Scream franchises. It is also a time to revisit some more family-friendly hits, like the Hocus Pocus duology or the classic special It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.

One of Disney’s supernatural series has become a modern classic since its debut nearly 30 years ago. This is Halloweentown, a family-friendly series which began with the eponymous TV movie in 1998. The original movie focuses on the story of a little girl who learns she is a witch from a long line of witches and must help save her town, Halloweentown, from evil. The first film was directed by Duwayne Dunham and features a leading cast including Debbie Reynolds, Kimberly J. Brown, Judith Hoag, Phillip Van Dyke, and Emily Roeske. To date, the Halloweentown series has four films.

The Halloweentown Franchise Is Conjuring Up Fun Frights On Disney+

Now, the Halloweentown series is resurfacing on the streaming charts yet again. Three of the four films in the franchise have made their way onto Disney+’s top 10 movies, including the original at no. 6, and Return the Halloweentown and Halloweentown II: Klabbar’s Revenge at no. 7 and no. 10, respectively. The franchise joins a list that includes other fall favorites, such as Hocus Pocus, Casper, Edward Scissorhands, and Hotel Transylvania.

Two of the Halloweentown movies even made it onto the platform’s top 10 overall list, which includes both movies and TV. Halloweentown High, the last of the original series, has yet to appear on the streaming charts, but being early in the season, there is still time. The fact that three of these movies are trending is evidence enough that the Halloweentown IP has quite the legacy and dedicated fan base.

Will The Supernatural Series Ever Return?

The lasting impact of the Halloweentown series on streaming begs the question of whether the series will ever receive reboot treatment. Some excitement was swirled up last year when former franchise stars Kimberly J. Brown and Daniel Kountz were announced to be reuniting on screen, but it was for a movie outside the Halloweentown franchise. As of now, there are no active plans for Halloweentown 5. That said, if the audience base continues to be this strong, there could be more hope of a change of tune from Disney.

Which best describes your Halloween-season viewing vibe this year?
